Chapter 8 - The Morning After the Storm

Morning sunlight broke over Boston Harbor, slicing through the tall Victorian windows of the Beacon Street safehouse and casting long golden bars across the Persian rugs.

In the massive gourmet kitchen, the smell of freshly brewed espresso and toasted brioche filled the air. Lorenzo stood at the marble island, wearing a fresh charcoal shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, carefully flipping pancakes with a silver spatula. His movements were precise, measured, and entirely domestic—a surreal sight for a man whose daily briefing usually involved shipping manifests and threat assessments.

At the counter, Lucia was busy coloring a picture of a snow leopard with a box of Crayola markers, her oversized pink sunglasses resting proudly on top of her head like a crown.

"Dad, you're burning the edges again," Lucia pointed out without looking up from her drawing.

"I am achieving optimal crispness, Lu," Lorenzo corrected smoothly, sliding a golden pancake onto a ceramic plate.

The heavy security door at the end of the hall clicked open. Footsteps echoed softly on the hardwood floors, and June appeared in the doorway. She had changed into a comfortable oversized cream sweater and fitted denim jeans, her red hair tied back in a loose, effortless ponytail. She looked like she had slept for ten hours, despite having spent the previous evening dodging bullets in a high-end Italian restaurant.

"Morning, syndicate boss," June greeted brightly, leaning against the doorframe with a mug of black coffee in her hands. "Did your portfolio survive the night?"

Lorenzo turned, his dark eyes softening the moment they landed on her. The grim, lethal shadow of the previous evening was entirely gone, replaced by an easy, grounded warmth.

"The market opened strong," Lorenzo replied, walking over and handing her a fresh plate piled high with pancakes and maple syrup. "And my risk assessment officer informs me that my personal life is no longer operating in the red."

June took the plate, her fingers brushing his. "Good. Because I have high standards for my dates, and dodging crossfire does not count as entertainment."

"Noted," Lorenzo said, leaning against the counter beside her. "Though I believe I still owe you a proper dinner. One that doesn't involve tactical retreats or fake mustaches."

"You're going to have to work very hard to top the excitement of last night, Castellano," June teased, taking a bite of the pancake. "Though honestly, standard quiet dinner conversation might be a welcome relief."

Lucia looked up from her coloring book, sliding her pink glasses down her nose. "Does this mean you two are officially boyfriend and girlfriend now? Because I already planned the seating chart for the wedding."

June nearly choked on her coffee, coughing softly into her hand while Lorenzo shot his daughter a warning glare that would have made generals cower.

"Eat your pancakes, Lu," Lorenzo warned, though the corners of his mouth were twitching upward.

"I'm just saying," Lucia muttered innocently, returning to her snow leopard. "Efficiency is key."
