Chapter 8 - The Truth Unmasked

The hallway was completely silent now. Doctors, nurses, and recovering patients stood transfixed at their doorways, watching the administrative queen of the hospital slowly shrink beneath the suffocating weight of military authority.
“I... I didn’t frame anyone!” Brenda lied desperately, her voice rising to a shrill, hysterical pitch. Her eyes darted from Marcus to Ethan, then to the sweating Dr. Hayes. “The dispensary computer doesn’t lie! Her badge was used! The fentanyl was found inside her personal jacket locker by Officer Harris! It was an open-and-shut investigation! Dr. Hayes, tell them!”
Dr. Hayes swallowed hard, stepping forward with trembling hands. “Brenda... the base intelligence cyber division just seized our server room fifteen minutes ago under federal warrant.”
Brenda froze. “What?”
Master Chief Hayes stepped forward, carrying a military-grade ruggedized tablet. He tapped the screen and held it directly in front of Brenda’s face. “You’re an arrogant amateur, Vance. You thought you were being clever by having your administrative access code trigger a thirty-minute network delay on camera four. You thought that gave you a blind spot to pull the drugs from the safe and slip them into Whitmore’s locker.”
The screen flickered to life. It wasn't the hospital’s compromised intranet feed; it was an encrypted high-definition backup feed from the Department of Defense’s internal surveillance network, which covered all joint military-civilian medical corridors.
The video was crystal clear. At 3:18 AM, while Clare was frantically doing chest compressions on the dying master chief in Room 418, the camera clearly showed Brenda Vance herself slipping into the pharmacy alcove using an unauthorized cloned badge programmed with Clare’s RFID sequence. The video showed Brenda carefully pocketing the fentanyl vials, walking straight into the empty staff locker room, slipping one into Clare’s trench coat pocket, and hiding the remaining four vials inside her own designer leather handbag tucked beneath the desk.
Brenda’s knees visibly buckled. The color vanished from her skin, leaving her a sickly, ghostly gray. “I... that... that’s not what it looks like... I was doing an inventory check...”
“Search her desk,” Ethan Mercer commanded quietly.
Two SEALs stepped forward without hesitation. One of them kicked open the locked lower drawer of the main reception desk with a single, effortless blow of his combat boot. Reaching inside, he pulled out Brenda’s expensive Italian leather purse, unzipped the main compartment, and turned it upside down over the counter.
Out tumbled four unopened, sealed hospital-grade vials of liquid fentanyl, alongside a digital RFID badge cloner bought off the dark web.
The entire nursing staff gasped in collective horror. Melissa clutched her mouth, stepping away from Brenda as if the supervisor had suddenly caught fire.
“Brenda Vance,” Master Chief Hayes said, unhooking a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. “By order of the Judge Advocate General and the United States Naval Criminal Investigative Service, you are under arrest for conspiracy, theft of government-controlled substances, evidence tampering, filing false criminal reports against active-duty personnel, and treasonous endangerment of military assets.”
The heavy steel cuffs snapped around Brenda’s wrists with two sharp, permanent clicks. The sound was devastatingly loud in the dead quiet of the corridor.
“No! You can’t do this to me! I have connections! I am the head of this department!” Brenda shrieked as she was dragged forward, her high heels scraping helplessly against the floor. “Dr. Hayes, stop them! Marcus, I’m your family!”
Marcus Vance didn’t even blink. He looked at her with pure ice. “You aren’t family, Brenda. You’re a disgrace to the uniform our family wore for four generations. Take her away.”

As the two massive operators marched the sobbing, hysterical supervisor down the hallway toward the elevators, Marcus turned back to Ethan and Dr. Hayes.
“Now,” Marcus said, his eyes scanning the cowering medical staff. “Where is Clare Whitmore?”
