Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in Room 412

On the fourth floor, Brenda Vance was standing in the corridor outside Room 412, thoroughly enjoying the sound of her own voice as she berated the head pharmacist over the phone. “I want Whitmore’s name scrubbed from every operational database by noon! And make sure the police report mentions that she was acting erratic and potentially under the influence during the incident!”
She hung up the phone with a satisfied snap just as the heavy double fire doors at the end of the hall swung open with a concussive bang.
Brenda turned, ready to scream at whatever orderly was making such a racket, but the words withered and died in her throat.
Emerging from the stairwell and the elevator bank came twelve towering SEALs, their tactical boots striking the floor in synchronized, thundering unison. The air in the hallway instantly plummeted in temperature. Behind them rushed Dr. Hayes, wringing his hands in sheer terror, his face completely drained of color.
“What... what is the meaning of this?” Brenda gasped, clutching her clipboard to her chest as the men fanned out across the corridor, instantly sealing off every exit and positioning themselves outside patient doors with professional efficiency. “This is a sterile medical ward! You can’t bring weapons up here!”
Marcus Vance stepped out from the formation, pulling off his flight gloves. He stopped two feet in front of Brenda.
Brenda blinked, her eyes widening in sudden, disbelieving recognition. “Marcus? Marcus, what on earth are you doing dressed like that? Did your father send you to check on my promotion? I told you years ago that if you stayed in the Navy, you would ruin your life—”
SLAP!
Marcus didn’t strike her, but he slammed his open hand against the nursing station counter right beside her head with the force of a gunshot. The sound echoed down the hallway like a crack of thunder. Brenda jumped a foot into the air, dropping her precious clipboard, which clattered loudly against the floor.
“Shut your mouth, Brenda,” Marcus commanded, his voice shaking with pure, unadulterated disgust. “Don’t you dare speak to me like you’re family. You lost the right to call me your nephew the day you tried to bribe the flight surgeon to ground me so you could show off your influence at your dinner parties.”
“Marcus! How dare you!” Brenda shrieked, backing against the wall. “Dr. Hayes, call base security! Arrest these men!”
“Base security is currently holding the perimeter under my direct orders, Brenda,” another voice boomed from the doorway of Room 412.
Commander Ethan Mercer stepped into the corridor. Despite his fractured ribs and the agony in his side, he stood tall, the gray flight helmet cradled under his arm like an ancient warrior’s shield.
Marcus immediately turned toward Ethan, his cold demeanor transforming into deep, reverent respect. He snapped a crisp, razor-sharp salute to the wounded pilot. “Commander Mercer. On behalf of the entire flight wing... thank you for keeping me in the air over the trench. You took the debris hit so my engine wouldn’t flame out.”

Ethan returned the salute with steady precision. “You flew like a lion, Marcus. But the woman who kept me alive long enough to see you land safely isn’t here to receive your thanks.”
Ethan turned his gaze toward Brenda, his eyes blazing with righteous wrath. “Because your aunt decided to frame her for grand larceny.”
