Chapter 5 - The Young Deputy’s Choice

The call ended with a sharp click, leaving the squad room so silent that the hum of the fluorescent fixtures sounded like a buzzing saw. Dalton Voss slumped against the booking counter, his head hanging low, looking as though all the air had been pumped out of his massive frame. The lanky sergeant slowly slid his badge and service weapon onto his desk, stepped away, and sat down in a corner chair with his hands firmly folded across his lap, making it clear he had officially resigned from whatever Voss had built.

I turned my attention to Deputy Caleb Price. The young man was trembling, but his eyes were wide and focused, darting nervously between his disgraced sheriff and me.

""Deputy Price,"" I said, my voice cutting through the thick gloom of the room.

""Yes, Your Honor?"" he replied instantly, his voice shaking but respectful. He stood at attention, his fingers glued to the seams of his trousers.

""How long have you worked for this department?""

""Six months, Your Honor. Just six months. I graduated from the regional academy in May.""

""And in those six months, how many times have you watched Sheriff Voss use that diner routine to seize property from out-of-town travelers?""

Price swallowed hard. He looked at Voss, whose eyes flared briefly with a desperate, warning glare. But Voss had no leverage left. The crown had slipped from his head, and both of them knew it. Price took a deep, shuddering breath, the moral conflict playing out across his youthful features before settling into resolve.

""At least eight times, Your Honor,"" Price answered, his voice growing clearer with every word. ""He targets people passing through on the interstate. Mostly folks who look like they can't afford an attorney or won't make a fuss. He claims their vehicle matches a suspect description, seizes their cash under civil forfeiture, and threatens them with felony charges until they sign a waiver abandoning the property just to get out of the county.""

""Caleb, shut your mouth!"" Voss barked weakly, but the command carried no weight. It sounded like the whine of a defeated dog.

""No, Sheriff, I won't,"" Price said, turning toward Voss with sudden, fiery courage. ""I told you last month that what we were doing wasn't right. I told you that taking that mechanic's life savings was wrong! You told me that if I opened my mouth, you’d make sure I was blacklisted from every police department in the state of Georgia. You said nobody would ever believe a rookie over an elected sheriff.""

Price turned back to me, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, metallic flash drive. He set it down gently on the counter beside my handbag.

""What is that, Deputy?"" I asked.

""It’s copies of the dispatch logs, Your Honor,"" Price said, his voice completely steady now. ""And the seized asset ledgers. Dalton keeps two sets of books. One for the county commissioners showing minimal forfeiture income, and a private ledger locked in the gun safe in his back office that tracks the actual cash taken during traffic stops. He splits the cash among the senior deputies at the end of every quarter. I... I refused my cut, Your Honor. I swear on my mother's grave, I never took a dime. I copied the files three weeks ago because I knew someone had to blow the whistle, but I didn't know who to trust. Every judge in this county owes their seat to his political machine.""

I looked down at the small black drive, then back at the young officer. ""You showed remarkable foresight, Deputy Price. And when the Department of Justice attorneys arrive, that flash drive is going to be the difference between you being listed as a co-conspirator or as the primary government witness.""

Voss closed his eyes and leaned his forehead against the laminate counter. He knew the safe’s contents. He knew the paper trail existed. His entire criminal empire, built over twelve years of intimidation, had just been completely dismantled in less than fifteen minutes by a rookie deputy and a woman he thought he could bully over a plate of eggs.
