Chapter 8 - The Price of Silence

I looked down at her, feeling absolutely nothing. Not grief, not love, not pity. Just an icy, vast void.
""You're lying, Victoria,"" I said quietly.
She reached out, trying to grab my arm, her fingers trembling with desperate urgency. ""I'm not lying, Ethan! I swear on my life! Grant is a monster. He took control of my development firm two years ago through blackmail. I had to play along to keep him from destroying our family! Give me the drives. If Grant gets his hands on them, he'll kill Mason in the hospital! We can take the offshore accounts, take Mason, and leave the country together before the warrants are issued!""
""I watched the raw bodycam video, Victoria,"" I said, every word hitting like a hammer strike.
She froze. The fake tears instantly stopped flowing. Her mouth hung open slightly as the color drained completely from her skin.
""I saw you standing under that umbrella,"" I continued, stepping toward her until I was towering over her trembling frame. ""I saw you watch Ryder stomp Mason's tibia in half. I heard you ask if he was going to talk. You didn't flinch. You didn't cry. You didn't even tell him you were sorry. You stood there in your thousand-dollar coat and watched our nineteen-year-old child scream in agony, and then you got back into Grant's car like you were leaving a business meeting.""
Victoria took a slow, horrified step backward. Her facade of the terrified, protective mother shattered into a million jagged pieces. Her eyes narrowed into slits of venomous malice.
""You don't understand how the world works, Ethan,"" she hissed, her voice dropping the frantic plea and turning completely ruthless. ""You think you can build your little suburban houses, play the honest blue-collar father, and survive in this state? Grant runs this entire region! Those riverfront docks are worth forty million dollars in federal logistics contracts! Mason was going to ruin everything because he couldn't keep his mouth shut about things that didn't concern him!""
""He's your son!"" I roared, the rage finally breaking through my restraint. ""You gave birth to him!""
""And he was weak!"" she shouted back, completely unhinged now. ""Just like you! A soft, sentimental fool who thinks morals mean something in this town! Give me the damn drives, Ethan! Ryder is five minutes behind me, and he won't hesitate to put you in the dirt right next to these gas pumps!""
She reached into her designer handbag, her hand closing around the grip of a small snub-nosed revolver.
Before she could clear the leather holster, two unmarked black tactical vans screeched into the truck stop, blocking both highway exits. High-intensity flashlights flooded the gravel lot in blinding white illumination. Half a dozen heavily armed federal agents leaped from the sliding doors, their assault rifles raised and leveled directly at Victoria's chest.

Victoria froze, the revolver caught half-drawn in her purse, staring into the blinding glare of thirty federal assault lights.
