Chapter 3 - Safe Behind Steel

Natalie stood frozen on the porch, her mind spinning between overwhelming shock and primal panic.

She stared down at the two armed men pinned to the concrete by Adrian’s private security detail, their groans muffled against the pavement.

Then she looked at Adrian Vale, standing three feet away in a flawless cashmere coat, looking entirely at home amid street violence.

"What is happening?" Natalie demanded, her voice shaking violently as she pressed Lucy tighter against her hip. "Who are those men? Why are you following us?"

Adrian took off his leather gloves, his expression somber and entirely devoid of the warmth he had shown at the lemonade table.

"Those men work for Victor Vale, my uncle," Adrian stated plainly. "They weren't here to talk, Natalie. They were sent to search your home and take whatever Daniel left behind."

Hearing Daniel's name roll off Adrian Vale's tongue sounded like a ghost invading her safe haven.

"Daniel died twelve years ago!" Natalie cried, tears burning behind her eyelids. "He was an accountant! He had nothing to do with people like you!"

Adrian stepped closer, his dark eyes holding hers with painful honesty.

"Daniel wasn't just an accountant, Natalie. He was my father's most trusted confidant. And he was my friend."

Natalie’s breath hitched in her throat.

"Your... your friend?"

"He tried to stop a war, Natalie," Adrian said softly, glancing down at Lucy, who was watching him with wide, solemn eyes. "And he died trying to protect you. If you stay in this house tonight, Victor will send twenty more men. Pack a single bag for Lucy. You're coming with me."

"I am not going anywhere with Chicago's most notorious crime boss," Natalie retorted, backing toward the front door with her chin defiantly raised.

Lucy tugged on Natalie's sleeve.

"Mom, he wore the yellow apron," Lucy whispered innocently. "Bad guys don't wear bright yellow aprons. It's against the rules."

Despite the sheer terror of the situation, Adrian's lips twitched slightly.

"Listen to your manager, Natalie. She has better judgment than both of us."

Mason stepped onto the porch, handing Adrian a handheld scanner.

"Police sirens three miles out, Boss. We have less than four minutes before the perimeter gets crowded."

Adrian turned back to Natalie, his voice dropping into a low, urgent plead that surprised even his own guards.

"I swore to Daniel on his grave that I would find out who betrayed him," Adrian whispered. "I failed him twelve years ago because I was too late. Do not let me fail his daughter tonight. Please, Natalie. Trust me for one night."

Natalie looked at Adrian's eyes.

She had spent five years avoiding powerful men, learning to read deceit in every twitch of a jaw or shifting glance.

In Adrian Vale's gaze, she found no malice, no arrogance, and no greed.

She saw only grief, fierce determination, and an unspoken vow carved out of iron.

"Ten minutes," Natalie whispered, her voice cracking. "Let me get her inhaler and her favorite book."

"Take eight," Adrian replied, stepping aside to guard her door. "Mason and I will be right here."
