Chapter 10 - The Lifetime Contract

That evening, the sun dipped below the Chicago skyline in a breathtaking blaze of orange, violet, and gold.
The streetlights flickered on along Lincoln Avenue, casting a soft, warm glow across the freshly trimmed lawn.
Inside the cozy kitchen, the aroma of roasting chicken and garlic potatoes filled the air.
Lucy was sitting at the wooden kitchen island, furiously writing on a sheet of yellow construction paper with a green crayon.
Adrian walked in from the patio, wiping his hands with a dish towel, looking completely at home among the clutter of school books, refrigerator magnets, and floral oven mitts.
"What are you drafting so intensely over there, Boss?" Adrian asked, leaning over Lucy's shoulder.
Lucy held up the paper with dramatic flair.
At the top, in large, crooked letters, was written: LIFETIME CONTRACT.
Below it were three bullet points:
Unlimited strawberry lemonade.
Must walk Barnaby twice a day.
No more running away from family dinners.
Adrian’s breath caught in his throat, a sudden warmth flooding his chest.
"That looks like a very serious legal document, Lucy."
"It is," Lucy said firmly, crossing her arms. "Mom says good partners sign contracts so nobody gets confused about where they belong."
Natalie walked in from the hallway, carrying a bowl of fresh salad, her eyes widening as she saw what her daughter was holding.
"Lucy! What are you doing?" Natalie gasped, blushing a brilliant shade of rose.
"I'm fixing his employment," Lucy declared simply, hopping off the barstool.
"He's been working here for six months without signing the paper."
Lucy thrust the yellow construction paper into Adrian's hand, along with a green crayon.
"Sign at the bottom, Mr. Adrian. Or you're fired."
Adrian chuckled, a deep, resonant sound full of boundless happiness.
He took the green crayon, knelt down beside Lucy, and signed his name in bold, elegant letters across the bottom line.
"Contract accepted, Boss," Adrian murmured, smiling warmly at the little girl.
Lucy squealed in triumph, grabbing her puppy from the rug and running down the hall toward the living room to watch cartoons.
"Barnaby! He signed it!" she cheered.
Natalie stood by the stove, shaking her head with a mixture of amusement and pure embarrassment.
"I am so sorry, Adrian. She has no boundaries."
Adrian rose to his full height, setting the yellow paper on the counter, and walked slowly toward Natalie.
The playful humor in his expression softened into something intensely tender, his gaze holding hers with unshakeable devotion.
"She has perfect boundaries, Natalie," Adrian said softly, stopping just inches from her.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box, resting it in the palm of his hand.
Natalie’s breath hitched, her hand flying to her mouth as tears welled in her hazel eyes.
Adrian gently opened the box to reveal an exquisite, sparkling diamond ring, elegant and timeless.
"For twelve years, I thought my life was defined by the debts I owed to the past," Adrian whispered, his voice trembling with genuine emotion.
"Then a little girl with a tomato timer ordered me behind a folding table, and I saw you standing in the sunlight."
He took Natalie's trembling hand, lifting it gently to his lips.
"I don't want a temporary shift anymore, Natalie. I want a lifetime. Will you marry me?"
Tears spilled over Natalie's cheeks, but her smile was brilliant, radiant, and completely free of fear.
"Yes," Natalie whispered, throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder. "Yes, Adrian. A thousand times yes."
Adrian wrapped his arms around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet as he kissed her with all the passion, gratitude, and fierce love that had been building inside him for months.
From the kitchen doorway, Lucy poked her head around the frame, holding the red tomato timer.
She twisted the top until the bell let out a loud, cheerful DING!

"Shift's over!" Lucy cheered happily. "Now we're a family!"
Adrian and Natalie laughed together through their tears, pulling Lucy into their warm, unbreakable embrace as the evening stars shone bright and clear over Chicago, lighting the beginning of their happily ever after.
