Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Brother

The subterranean corridors of Cook County Jail smelled of industrial bleach, damp concrete, and rotting hope. At two in the morning, the prison was a tomb of shadows, broken only by the intermittent buzz of flickering fluorescent tubes.
The heavy iron door of the solitary confinement ward groaned open. Two guards, their faces obscured by balaclavas and their badge numbers covered in black tape, stepped aside to let me pass.
Inside cell 104, Daniel Blackwood sat on a thin metal cot, dressed in an orange jumpsuit that hung loosely on his frame. When the door slammed shut behind me, he looked up, his hollow eyes catching the harsh fluorescent light. A sickly smile crept onto his bruised lips.
""Come to gloat, big brother?"" Daniel rasped, his voice raw. ""Or did you bring another stuffed animal to interrogate?""
I didn't answer immediately. I took off my charcoal overcoat, folded it with terrifying precision, and laid it across the metal table. I slowly rolled up the sleeves of my dress shirt, revealing the intricate black ink sprawling over my muscular forearms—tattoos depicting the archangel Michael slaying the dragon.
""Julian is alive,"" I stated plainly.
Daniel’s smile widened, though his eyes betrayed a sudden spasm of terror. ""I know. Pretty smart, right? You always thought you were the genius of the Blackwood family, Jack. You thought father left you the throne because of your iron will. But father left it to you because he knew you were too blind to see the snakes in your own garden.""
In a blur of motion, I crossed the room, grabbed Daniel by the throat, and slammed his skull back against the reinforced concrete wall. Dust rained down from the ceiling. His hands clawed frantically at my iron grip, but my fingers dug into his neck like hydraulic clamps.
""Listen to me very carefully, Daniel,"" I growled, bringing my face inches from his twitching nose. ""Maria emptied the safe. Julian has cut a deal with the feds. In four hours, federal agents will raid our family holdings. When that happens, your immunity goes out the window. Julian isn't sharing that forty million with you. He left you here to rot while he takes the money, takes Sarah, and takes Lily.""
Daniel's eyes bulged. He gagged, his heels kicking against the concrete. ""J-Julian... promised...""
""Julian lied to you!"" I roared, slamming him against the wall a second time before letting go.
Daniel collapsed onto the cold floor, coughing violently, gasping for air while clutching his bruised throat. He looked up at me through streaming tears, his arrogance crumbling into desperate reality.
""He told me... he told me he just wanted his cut from the port,"" Daniel wheezed. ""He said if we framed you for the arms shipment, the family would force you to step down, and I would take over. He swore he didn't care about the family business anymore!""
""Where is he?"" I demanded, towering over him like an executioner. ""Where is the safehouse?""
""I don't know!"" Daniel sobbed. ""I swear to God, Jack! He never told me where he was hiding! He only communicated through burner phones left in dead-drops around the Navy Pier!""
I stared at him for five long seconds. I had interrogated hundreds of men in my life; I knew the cadence of a man clinging to a lie, and I knew the pathetic pitch of a coward who realized he had been played for a fool. Daniel genuinely didn't know.
""You pathetic idiot,"" I whispered in disgust. ""You traded your family for scraps tossed by a dead man.""
""Wait... Jack, wait!"" Daniel scrambled forward on his knees, grabbing the cuff of my trousers just as I reached for my coat. ""Maria! Maria knows! Julian’s father bought an old dairy farm in Kenosha thirty years ago. It’s off the grid—no utilities under Bennett's name. Maria’s sister used to live there. If Julian is anywhere, he's with her!""
I stopped. Kenosha, Wisconsin. Just an hour and a half north across the state line. Far enough to evade Chicago municipal jurisdiction, close enough to orchestrate a federal takedown.
Suddenly, Daniel gasped.
His eyes rolled back into his head, showing only whites. A violent tremor ripped through his entire body. Thick white foam began bubbling from the corners of his mouth, spilling down his chin.
""Daniel?"" I stepped back, my senses flaring.
He collapsed onto his side, his limbs locking in rigid, violent convulsions. His fingernails clawed at the concrete floor so violently that two of them snapped backwards, smearing blood on the grey stone.
""GUARDS!"" I roared, banging my fist against the steel door. ""MEDICAL! NOW!""
The door flew open. Detective Harris rushed in, his gun drawn, followed by two panicked prison medics.
""What happened?!"" Harris shouted, kneeling beside my brother.
""He's been poisoned,"" I said, my voice ice-cold. ""Look at his pupils.""
One of the medics ripped open Daniel's orange shirt. On his left forearm was a tiny, fresh puncture mark—barely the size of a needle head, surrounded by a rapidly spreading purple halo of dead tissue.
""Potassium cyanide cocktail,"" the medic gasped, frantically checking for a pulse. ""He's in full cardiac arrest! Get the crash cart!""
Daniel's body gave one last, violent heave. His chest sank, his jaw went slack, and the light vanished from his eyes forever.
Harris looked up at me from the floor, his face drained of all color. ""He's gone, Jack. Someone got to him inside the holding cell before you even arrived.""
I looked down at my dead brother. The anger in my chest crystallized into something far more dangerous: total, absolute focus. Julian wasn't just planning to send me to prison. He was executing everyone who could contradict his federal testimony.
""Harris,"" I said, putting my overcoat back on and buttoning it calmly. ""Call the coroner. Tell him Daniel died of natural causes.""

""Jack, where are you going?"" Harris demanded, scrambling to his feet.
""To Wisconsin,"" I replied, stepping out into the dark hallway. ""To attend a family reunion.""
