Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Coup

The executive headquarters of Davenport Logistics occupied the entire top floor of a gleaming glass skyscraper overlooking the Chicago River. By eight-thirty the following morning, the atmosphere in the boardroom was tense enough to cut with a glass cutter. Twelve board members, all men in bespoke gray suits representing the city’s oldest commercial fortunes, sat around the forty-foot table of polished walnut. At the head of the table sat Richard Sterling, the lead independent director and a lifelong crony of Patricia Davenport.

Whispers circled the room like hornets. News of the late-night eviction at Astor Street had already leaked through high-society backchannels, though the details were wildly distorted. Some claimed Khloe had hired street mercenaries; others whispered that Harrison had fled the state after embezzlement rumors surfaced.

"Gentlemen, please," Sterling barked, striking his heavy gavel against the table. "We are here to stabilize the leadership of this company following Liam’s tragic passing. Under emergency corporate bylaws, we are moving to confirm Harrison Davenport as interim CEO and void any unvetted testamentary transfers until a forensic audit—"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom were suddenly flung open with tremendous force, banging against the drywall with the sound of a gunshot.

Two broad-shouldered men in tailored dark suits entered first, sweeping their gazes across the room with trained tactical efficiency. Behind them walked Khloe.

She was stunning. The grief and exhaustion of the previous night had been forged into armor. She wore a sharp, tailored ivory power suit that contrasted starkly with the sea of dull executive gray, her dark hair swept back in a sleek, immaculate chignon. Her jaw was set with absolute poise, but it was the man walking beside her that sucked every ounce of oxygen out of the boardroom.

Roman Moretti wore a charcoal pinstripe three-piece suit, a black silk tie held by a silver pin, and a presence so imposing that two elderly board members instinctively stood up out of pure deference.

"Good morning, gentlemen," Khloe said, her clear, melodious voice ringing through the silent room as she walked straight toward the head of the table. "I believe you're holding a meeting regarding my company without the principal shareholder present."

Richard Sterling turned purple with indignation, his gavel trembling in his hand. "Mrs. Davenport! This is a closed executive session! You cannot simply barge in here with... with unauthorized bodyguards! Security! Call building security immediately!"

"Building security is currently enjoying fresh espresso and pastries downstairs, courtesy of my catering team," Roman said casually, pulling out the heavy leather executive chair at the head of the table and gesturing for Khloe to sit. She took the seat without flinching, folding her hands calmly on the mahogany surface.

Roman remained standing directly behind her, his hands resting lightly on the high back of her leather chair, looming over Richard Sterling like an encroaching thunderhead.

"Who the devil do you think you are?" Sterling demanded, though his voice lacked conviction as his eyes caught the distinct platinum signet ring on Roman's finger—the crest of the Moretti family.

A collective shudder ran through the older men at the table. Even in the pristine towers of the Loop, everyone knew the face of Roman Moretti. He was the shadow governor of the state, the man who built empires and ended bloodlines with equal indifference.

"I am Mrs. Davenport's senior strategic advisor," Roman said smoothly, a predatory glint in his dark eyes. "And I am here to ensure that Liam Davenport’s legal testament is executed without further... clerical resistance."

Enzo stepped forward, placing a thick stack of blue-bound dossiers in front of every board member at the table.

"Before you consider voting on Mr. Sterling’s emergency motion," Khloe spoke up, her eyes locking onto Sterling with unflinching authority, "I suggest you open those folders. Inside, you will find certified copies of Liam's irrevocable living trust, establishing that fifty-one percent of all voting shares belong solely to me. You will also find an exhaustive audit of Harrison Davenport’s shell companies in the Cayman Islands, showing six million dollars in unauthorized kickbacks siphoned from your freight contracts over the past eighteen months."

Gasps erupted around the table. Men began frantically flipping through the audited bank receipts and offshore wire transfers.

"This is outrageous! Slander!" Sterling spluttered, sweating through his stiff collar.

"Page twelve, Richard," Roman murmured softly, leaning forward just enough so Sterling could smell the cold danger radiating from him. "Page twelve details your personal involvement in facilitating those offshore wires in exchange for a seven-percent cut. Which means that by noon, you can either step down as director and endorse Khloe’s appointment as Chairwoman... or my attorneys will deliver that exact packet to the Federal Trade Commission and the IRS criminal investigation division."

Sterling stared at the open page in horror. His throat worked silently, but no sound came out. The absolute ruin of his entire family legacy, his reputation, and his freedom was laid out in crisp, black-and-white ink.

"I... I see," Sterling croaked, his hands shaking so violently he dropped his gavel onto the floor. It rolled harmlessly to Roman's feet. "In light of... new documentation... it appears a transition of leadership is legally mandated."

Khloe leaned back in Liam’s chair, feeling the steady, reassuring weight of Roman's presence behind her. "Thank you, Richard. Your resignation is accepted, effective immediately. Gentlemen, take your seats. We have a shipping empire to rebuild."
