Chapter 9 - The Healer's Path

By the autumn of the following year, St. Jude College of Nursing was in full swing.

Nora’s days began at dawn and ended long after sunset. Between clinical rotations in the pediatric burn ward, pharmacology exams, and bi-weekly board meetings for the Dorchester clinic, she barely had time to think about the night at the Beacon Grand.

Yet Ethan Hart was a constant, gentle presence in her life.

He never pressured her. He never acted the part of a wealthy benefactor. Instead, he showed up at the hospital library with cardboard cups of coffee when she was studying for midterms. He helped Linda move into their new two-bedroom brownstone near the clinic—a home Nora paid for with her fellowship stipend and her mother's modest administrative salary at the community center.

On a rainy Thursday evening, Nora walked out of the hospital lobby, her shoulders aching from a twelve-hour shift in the critical care unit.

Ethan’s station wagon was parked near the emergency entrance, the wipers rhythmic against the glass. When she climbed into the passenger seat, he handed her a warm pastry wrapped in butcher paper.

""You look exhausted,"" he said, shifting into gear.

""A twelve-year-old boy came in with third-degree burns this morning,"" Nora murmured, leaning her head back against the headrest. ""His mother couldn't afford the ambulance fee and carried him four blocks in the rain. I spent six hours debriding his arms.""

Ethan reached across the console, his fingers gently brushing the back of her hand. ""How is he?""

""He's going to keep his hands,"" Nora said, a small, tired smile touching her face. ""He's going to be fine.""

She turned her head to look at Ethan. Over the past eighteen months, the lines of tension and corporate cynicism that had once hardened his features had completely smoothed away. He looked happier, grounded in work that mattered.

""Evelyn wants us for Sunday dinner,"" Ethan mentioned, watching the road ahead. ""She says she has an announcement to make, and she won't tell me what it is.""

""Whenever your grandmother has an announcement, someone either gets promoted or someone loses a corporation,"" Nora chuckled.

""This time, I think it's personal,"" Ethan said, glancing at her with a warmth that made Nora’s pulse quicken slightly. ""She told me yesterday that for thirty years she worried about what would happen to our family name after she died. She said she finally stopped worrying.""

Nora looked out the window at the city lights reflecting across the wet pavement of Boston Harbor. She remembered the girl in the banquet shoes who had stood shivering on the number 9 bus, wondering if she would ever have a future. That world seemed a million miles away, not because she had escaped it, but because she had brought its courage with her into the light.
