Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Richard Voss broke into a cold sweat. He stepped around the table, placing his trembling hands onto the edge of the mahogany.
""Mrs. Hart, please,"" Richard pleaded, his arrogance completely gone. ""The mezzanine loan note. My creditors are waiting for the confirmation wire. If Hart Logistics calls that note, four hundred construction workers lose their jobs on Monday morning. Everything I built will be liquidated.""
Evelyn leaned back in her chair. ""The construction workers will not lose their jobs, Richard. Hart Logistics will assume operational control of the waterfront project directly under a court-appointed trustee. Your personal equity, however, is forfeit. You will receive twenty cents on the dollar for your common shares.""
""You're ruining us!"" Celeste shrieked, losing her composure entirely. ""Over a clumsy banquet waitress? Over a broken wine glass?""
""Over an assault,"" Nora spoke up, her voice ringing clearly across the room.
Everyone looked at her.
Nora stood up, her small stature holding an intensity that made Madison take an involuntary step backward.
""You called me 'that girl,'"" Nora said, looking straight into Madison’s wide eyes. ""You thought because I wore a black apron and carried your drinks, I had no family, no pride, and no voice. You thought you could hit me and pay the hotel manager to erase me from the building. But I am the person who will be monitoring your parents' heart monitors when they are sick. I am the person who will hold your grandmother's hand when she takes her last breath. People like me keep the world turning while people like you take photographs of your dresses.""
Madison’s lip trembled. For the first time, a sliver of genuine, terrifying shame broke through her manicured veneer.
""The police are waiting downstairs in the lobby, Madison,"" Ethan announced quietly, gesturing toward the frosted glass doors.
Celeste gasped. ""Police? You called the police on my daughter?""
""Miss Bennett has the legal right to file criminal battery charges,"" Ethan said. ""And the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has already opened a preliminary grand jury inquiry based on the security footage.""
""Wait!"" Madison cried out, real tears finally breaking through her composure. She looked at Nora with wide, panicked eyes. ""Please... don't do this. I’ll apologize. I’ll pay for your school! I’ll pay you whatever you want! Just don't let them arrest me!""
""You can't buy your way out of a mirror, Madison,"" Nora answered quietly. ""The police aren't here because I want revenge. They're here because actions have consequences. Welcome to the real world.""
Two uniform officers from the Boston Police Department entered the boardroom, accompanied by a detective in plainclothes. The lead officer stepped toward Madison, producing a pair of steel handcuffs.

""Madison Voss? You are under arrest for simple battery and disorderly conduct. You have the right to remain silent.""
As the steel cuffs clicked around Madison’s wrists, Celeste collapsed into a chair, weeping hysterically, while Richard covered his face with his hands. Madison looked back at Nora one last time as she was led toward the private elevators, her lavish, untouchable life crumbling beneath the weight of twenty-two seconds of viral truth.
