Chapter 3 - Blood and Business

Victoria blinked, her sneer frozen midway between arrogance and sheer disbelief. ""The owner’s suite? What ridiculous delusion is this?"" She scoffed, crossing her arms defensively. ""This estate is owned by Sovereign Holdings, a multinational hospitality trust based in Boston! My husband personally dined with their regional vice president to secure this reservation two years in advance. Don't stand here fabricating fairy tales to preserve your bruised pride, Helen. It’s unbecoming."" Helen did not even glance at Victoria as she pressed the green button on her screen and brought the phone to her ear. ""Hello, Julian,"" she spoke in a tone that was crisp, authoritative, and utterly devoid of the meekness she had displayed moments ago. ""Yes, I am outside the stone rotunda. No, do not dispatch security. I am dealing with a family misunderstanding. Just hold the formal greeting until I inform you otherwise."" She hung up and slipped the device back into her handbag, meeting Victoria’s widening eyes with chilling serenity. Ethan looked at his mother, his chest aching with a complex mixture of guilt and profound awakening. ""Mom... you own the Highwood Manor estate?"" Helen looked up at her son, her gaze softening with infinite tenderness. ""Your father and I acquired the land twenty years ago when it was just an abandoned orchard, Ethan. Sovereign Holdings is simply Bennett Group’s private hospitality subsidiary. I never flaunted it because wealth was never what defined our family. We built this place as a sanctuary for people to celebrate real love, authentic devotion, and lifelong commitment. But it seems some guests believe gold gives them permission to spit upon the dirt."" Victoria’s breath hitched in her throat. She gripped the terrace stone balustrade, her knuckles turning white. ""You... you own Sovereign? That’s impossible. Richard told me Bennett Group was just a regional trucking firm with a modest balance sheet!"" ""Your husband only reviewed the publicly registered logistics division when Ethan submitted his introductory business portfolio,"" Helen explained calmly. ""Richard never bothered to look past the surface because, like you, he measures a book exclusively by the gold leaf on its spine. He assumed a quiet widow living in a classic brick bungalow must be scraping by on life insurance dividends. I chose never to disabuse him of that flattering vanity."" Just then, Richard Whitmore himself strode through the French doors of the terrace. Dressed in a bespoke tuxedo, holding a glass of Scotch, he wore the smug expression of a man who believed money could buy any virtue on earth. ""What is the commotion out here? Ethan, you should be standing at the altar in twenty minutes! Victoria, why haven't the string players started the prelude? Our venture capital partners are arriving in the main foyer."" Victoria rushed toward her husband, her voice frantic and breathless. ""Richard... Richard, she says... Helen claims she owns the Highwood estate! She claims Bennett Group controls Sovereign Holdings!"" Richard froze for a split second, then threw his head back in a booming, mocking laugh that echoed uncomfortably against the stone walls. ""Oh, good Lord! Victoria, have you lost your mind? Helen, I admire your maternal imagination, but let's be realistic. Highwood Manor is valued at eighty million dollars. The Bennett logistics firm barely clears four million in net operational profit a year. Did you hire an actor to call your phone, Helen? Really, Ethan, control your mother. This kind of social climbing theatrics is deeply embarrassing for everyone involved."" Ethan took a menacing step forward, but Helen gently caught his forearm. Her touch was iron-firm. ""Richard,"" Helen said, her voice dropping into a register that made the older man’s smirk falter. ""Do you remember the bridge loan your shipping conglomerate desperately required three months ago? The twenty-five-million-dollar mezzanine facility provided through Apex Global Partners to keep your freight fleet from entering federal bankruptcy receivership?"" Richard’s face lost every ounce of color. The crystal tumbler slipped from his fingers, shattering across the flagstones, amber liquor splashing against his polished patent-leather shoes.
