Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Empire

Arthur stepped between me and Marcus, shielding me from the sight of him. He looked down at his chief legal counsel, who was already opening a thick leather portfolio.
“Sterling Logistics,” Arthur commanded, his tone calm, cold, and final. “Give me the operational summary.”
The attorney stepped forward, her voice brisk and amplified in the silent room. “Sterling Logistics currently relies on Vance Global for eighty-two percent of its maritime freight allocation and ninety-four percent of its inland terminal leases. Marcus Sterling has four outstanding bridge loans totaling forty-two million dollars, all underwritten by Vance Capital subsidiaries, maturing in forty-eight hours.”
Marcus stopped scooping up the papers, his hands freezing mid-air. “No... no, no, no! Arthur, Mr. Vance, please! Those bridge loans are for our fleet expansion! If you call those notes, Sterling Logistics will enter involuntary liquidation by Monday morning!”
“Not by Monday,” Arthur replied smoothly, glancing at his platinum wristwatch. “By midnight. Call the loans immediately. Revoke every dock access permit from Maine to Virginia. Cancel all terminal leases. Any freight forwarder found working with Sterling Logistics will have their Vance Global tier-one status permanently terminated.”
“Mother! Do something!” Marcus screamed, scrambling across the floor toward Victoria. “Talk to him! You knew his family in Boston! Beg him!”
Victoria was trembling so violently she couldn't speak. She looked at Arthur with tears of humiliation and panic running through her heavy makeup. “Arthur... we have known each other for forty years. My son was foolish. He made a terrible mistake. Don’t destroy everything our families built over a domestic argument!”
“This was never an argument,” Arthur said, stepping closer to her. “This was a revelation of character. You starved my pregnant daughter of financial independence, you stripped her of her dignity, you insulted my unborn grandchild, and you treated her kindness like garbage. You wanted to impress your guests with power tonight, Victoria? This is what real power looks like.”
Arthur turned back to me, his gaze softening entirely. He took my hand and placed it gently in the crook of his arm. “Come, Subeo. The medical team is waiting in the lead vehicle. Dr. Bennett is on board to ensure your blood pressure has stabilized. You will never set foot in this house again.”
As Arthur guided me toward the grand double doors, Marcus lunged forward, grabbing at the hem of my pale blue dress. “Subeo! Don’t do this! Think of our son! He needs a father! He needs the Sterling name!”

I stopped, looking down at him. With deliberate care, I pulled the fabric of my dress from his grasp, refusing to let him touch me.
“My son will have an honorable grandfather,” I told him, looking him in the eyes. “He will never carry the name of a coward who throws his family into the dark.”
