Chapter 10 - A Brand New Horizon

Six months later, spring arrived in West Texas with an explosion of bluebonnets along the highways and warm, gentle breezes sweeping across Sixth Street.

The Amarillo Chamber of Commerce annual awards banquet was held in the grand ballroom of the historic Herring Hotel. Over three hundred civic leaders, historic preservationists, and business executives filled the candlelit tables, dressed in elegant tuxedos and evening gowns.

At the center table sat Jolie Cantrell, looking stunning in a floor-length emerald green gown that accentuated her graceful silhouette. Her hair was styled in soft waves over her shoulders, and her hands, though still showing the faint calluses of honest labor, held a crystal flute of sparkling cider.

Beside her sat Cullen Strickland, dashing in a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo, leaning in close to whisper a joke that made Jolie laugh behind her napkin. Across the table, Posie was happily swinging her patent-leather shoes, wearing a matching green velvet dress and proudly sporting her miniature beaver-felt hat pin on her ribbon sash.

The mayor stepped up to the podium, tapping the microphone for silence.

""Ladies and gentlemen,"" the mayor announced, smiling out over the crowd. ""Tonight, we present the West Texas Heritage Preservation Vanguard Award. For decades, our historic landmarks have faced the threat of unchecked demolition and corporate neglect. But this year, one company proved that honoring our past is the greatest investment in our future.""

The spotlight swung across the grand ballroom, locking onto Table Twelve.

""For developing an innovative, non-destructive restoration technique that saved the 1938 Strickland Historic Landmark without losing a single square inch of original glass, the city honors Strickland Hat Company and its brilliant Director of Preservation, Ms. Jolie Cantrell!""

The room erupted into thunderous applause and a standing ovation.

Jolie felt a sudden wave of emotion rise in her chest. For years, she had entered these grand commercial buildings through service alleys before sunrise, invisible to the executives who worked inside, judged only if a smudge was left behind. Tonight, the most powerful people in the city were rising to their feet to honor her name.

Cullen stood up, took Jolie's hand, and gently guided her to the stage.

The mayor handed her a heavy bronze plaque shaped like an architectural arch. Jolie adjusted the microphone, looking out at the sea of smiling faces, and finally down at Posie, who was waving enthusiastically from the center table.

""Seven months ago,"" Jolie said, her voice clear, resonant, and steady, ""I was cleaning storefronts in the dark with my daughter asleep in the truck, wondering if my small business would survive the winter. My late father always told me that glass reflects everything: the light, the storms, and the truth. You can't paint over a crack, and you can't scrub away a lie. When you stand by the truth, even when it terrifies you, the world will eventually see things clearly.""

She looked directly at Cullen, whose eyes shone with undisguised pride and affection.

""Thank you to Cullen Strickland and the Strickland family for believing that integrity is worth fighting for. And to my daughter Posie—we're all done with the spots, baby. From here on out, it’s all clear.""

The ballroom exploded into another roar of applause.

Later that evening, after the banquet had ended and the streets had quieted under a canopy of bright Texas stars, Cullen and Jolie walked slowly down Sixth Street. Cullen carried a sleeping Posie gently in his arms, her head resting peacefully against his tuxedo shoulder, her tiny fingers wrapped around his lapel.

They stopped in front of the Strickland Hat Company.

The golden showroom lights illuminated the flawless curved glass, reflecting the warm glow of the streetlamps and the quiet beauty of the night.

""The county hospital board voted this afternoon,"" Cullen murmured softly, looking over at Jolie.

Jolie glanced up, surprised. ""On the facility restoration contract?""

Cullen nodded, a tender smile touching his lips. ""They awarded your independent company the master preservation tender for the entire medical complex. Ten years. Unanimous vote.""

Jolie let out a soft, joyful breath, leaning her shoulder lightly against Cullen’s arm as they stood together on the sidewalk where she had once knelt in fear in the freezing rain.

""Looks like your schedule is going to be pretty full, Director Cantrell,"" Cullen teased gently.

Jolie looked up at the man who had become her staunchest ally, her trusted partner, and something far deeper that was only just beginning to bloom between them. She reached up and lightly brushed a fallen leaf from Posie's hair.

May you like

""My schedule has plenty of room, Cullen,"" Jolie whispered, smiling as the Texas wind blew gently around them. ""As long as we keep Sixth Street first on the list.""

Cullen shifted Posie carefully into one arm and reached out with his free hand, intertwining his fingers with Jolie’s. Together, they looked through the crystal-clear glass into a future as bright and flawless as the dawn."
