Chapter 4 - The Shattered Door

Inside the dining room of 414 Maple Crest Avenue, the atmosphere was triumphant. Marcus carved thick slices of prime rib onto antique porcelain plates, while Evelyn opened a second bottle of expensive wine.

""To new beginnings,"" Marcus toasted, clinking his glass against Chloe's. ""The title transfer was recorded electronically under emergency filing at five-fifteen. In thirty days, we list the property for seven hundred and fifty thousand. After paying off our personal credit lines, we can relocate to the Gold Coast.""

""Clara really was a fool,"" Chloe giggled, twirling her fork. ""She actually believed you loved her. All those years she spent eating dry toast so she could pay off her father's notes, while we planned our future.""

Before Marcus could swallow his wine, the entire house shook.

A sound like an artillery shell detonating rocked the front entryway. The heavy oak front door—the door Marcus had locked half an hour earlier—did not simply swing open. It splintered violently off its hinges, ripping out the doorframe studs in a shower of plaster dust and flying wood shards.

Evelyn screamed, dropping her wine glass, which shattered across the hardwood floor. Marcus leaped up from the dining table, knocking his chair backward. ""What the hell? Who's there? I have a shotgun in the closet!""

He rushed into the foyer, his face flushed with panic, but stopped dead in his tracks.

The entryway was completely filled with armed men dressed in dark tactical gear, carrying suppressed submachine guns at low ready. Standing in the center of the ruined foyer, framed by the swirling snow blowing in through the shattered opening, was Matteo Bellini.

In his arms, swathed in an enormous black cashmere overcoat, was Clara Vance.

Marcus's breath caught in his throat. As a corporate accountant at Bellini Tower’s subsidiary branch, Marcus knew exactly who Matteo Bellini was. Everyone in Illinois knew who he was. Matteo Bellini was a shadow king—a billionaire whose legitimate shipping conglomerates were matched only by his ruthless control over the city's underbelly. Governors took his calls; federal judges avoided his stare.

""M-Mr. Bellini?"" Marcus stammered, his voice climbing an octave, his knees trembling violently. ""What... what are you doing in my house?""

Matteo stepped over the splintered wood, his eyes locking onto Marcus with the lethal stillness of an apex predator. He did not yell. He did not raise his voice. He merely looked at the accountant as if he were an insect that had crawled onto his shoe.

""Your house?"" Matteo asked softly.

He turned his head slightly toward Dominic. ""Dominic. Take Miss Vance to the command vehicle. Ensure Dr. Rossi initiates warming protocols immediately. If her core temperature does not stabilize within fifteen minutes, notify the trauma unit at Northwestern.""

Dominic stepped forward, reverently taking Clara into his arms. Clara barely stirred, her head resting limp against Dominic's tactical vest as he carried her swiftly out into the waiting warmth of the medical SUV.

Once she was clear of the doorway, Matteo stepped further into the house. Behind him, four security operatives fanned out, sealing every exit, their weapons held with terrifying familiarity.

Chloe and Evelyn huddled behind the dining room archway, their faces pale with terror.

""Listen to me, Mr. Bellini,"" Marcus pleaded, raising both hands defensively, his voice shaking so hard his teeth rattled. ""There’s a mistake here. Clara... Clara is just an employee. This is a private domestic dispute. She had no legal right to be here. I hold the certified deed to this residence!""

Matteo slowly unbuttoned his suit jacket, reached into his inner pocket, and pulled out a gold cigarette case. He selected one, lit it with a heavy gold lighter, and exhaled a thin stream of gray smoke into the festive dining room.

""You have five seconds to show me that deed, boy,"" Matteo said quietly. ""Before I decide whether your hands are necessary for the rest of your life.""
