Chapter 10 - The Queen of Bellini Tower

Clara looked at him with curiosity, tilting her head. ""A promotion? Above executive secretary? There is no higher position in the corporation, Mr. Bellini. You own the entire board.""

""Not in the corporation,"" Matteo replied, taking a deliberate step closer to her.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He did not drop to his knee like an ordinary suitor; Matteo Bellini was a man who stood tall before kings. But as he opened the box, his dark eyes held a profound vulnerability that Clara had never witnessed in all their years together.

Inside rested an extraordinary ring—a flawless, five-carat emerald-cut diamond surrounded by a halo of tiny seed pearls, paying homage to the comb she cherished.

Clara's breath caught in her throat. She looked from the magnificent jewel up to his face, her heart hammering against her ribs.

""For six years, Clara, you have been the heartbeat of my life,"" Matteo said, his voice deep, steady, and rich with emotion. ""I watched you work in silence. I watched you carry burdens that would have broken lesser men. I stayed in the shadows because you were engaged to a man I despised, and I respected your loyalty too much to destroy your dream.""

He reached out, his warm, strong hand gently cupping her chin.

""That man was a parasite who couldn't see the queen standing before him. I am not a gentle man, Clara. My world is dangerous, complicated, and filled with enemies. But I swear on my mother’s soul that if you stand beside me, no one will ever hurt you, cheat you, or leave you out in the cold again. I want you to be my partner. My equal. My wife.""

Clara looked into his eyes—the eyes of the man who had torn apart the city’s blizzard to pull her from the snow, who had restored her dignity and given her back her name.

For the first time in her life, she didn't feel tired. She didn't feel alone.

""Yes,"" Clara whispered, a radiant smile breaking across her face. ""Yes, Matteo.""

He smiled—a rare, breathtaking smile that transformed his stern face—and slid the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly. He pulled her into his arms, his mouth meeting hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed away the cold of the past forever.

Six months later, on a warm June afternoon, the society pages of Chicago, New York, and Rome carried the same front-page headline: Matteo Bellini Weds Clara Vance at Holy Name Cathedral in City's Most Extravagant Celebration of the Century.

Marcus Keller read the news from the common recreation room of the federal penitentiary in Marion, Illinois, dressed in a standard-issue orange jumpsuit, his scarred foot aching with every step. Beside him, in a women’s correctional facility three hundred miles away, Chloe Vance scrubbed institutional kitchen floors, her hands raw and chapped, while Evelyn Vance spent her days filling out endless legal appeals that no judge would ever read.

Meanwhile, high on the forty-eighth floor of Bellini Tower, Clara Bellini sat beside her husband in the corner office overlooking the sparkling blue waters of Lake Michigan. In her hair rested her mother’s pearl comb, catching the brilliant summer sun, her life filled with unbreakable love, unyielding protection, and the sweet, eternal warmth of justice."
