Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Lorenzo stopped at the head of the table, towering directly over Vincenzo, who remained glued to the chair, his face drained of every drop of color, his chest heaving with silent, unadulterated terror. For ten excruciating seconds, nobody in the hall dared to breathe. The thirty syndicate leaders stood paralyzed, watching the boss they had believed permanently crippled stand tall, broad-shouldered, and radiating an aura of lethal power that surpassed even his legendary father. Lorenzo reached down, rested his knuckles on the polished wood of the table, and leaned forward until his face was inches away from his old mentor. "You look surprised to see me on my feet, Vincenzo," Lorenzo said, his voice quiet, calm, and terrifyingly smooth. "Did you think I would stay in that chair forever?"
Vincenzo stammered, attempting to force his customary warm smile onto his trembling lips, but the facade collapsed completely under Lorenzo’s icy glare. Vincenzo attempted to claim that he had organized the meeting purely out of concern for Lorenzo’s health and the stability of the organization, but Lorenzo cut him off with a single, sharp gesture. Lorenzo snapped his fingers, and Marco stepped forward, tossing a heavy leather briefcase onto the center of the table. The latches popped open, revealing the five hundred thousand dollars in cash that Vincenzo had handed to Clara three days prior. Beside the cash, Marco placed an encrypted audio recorder and the sealed glass vial containing the neurotoxin, which had been analyzed and verified by independent forensic labs that very morning.

Lorenzo pressed the play button on the recorder. Vincenzo’s own voice echoed through the grand hall, crisp, clear, and unmistakable: the veiled threats against Mia, the instructions to poison Lorenzo’s nightly chamomile tea, and the cold calculation of a man who intended to slaughter anyone standing between himself and absolute power. The council capos erupted into furious murmurs, their faces hardening into masks of disgust. To conspire against an outside rival was standard business, but to poison one’s own boss—a man Vincenzo had raised like a son—and to threaten an innocent toddler in the process crossed every inviolable line of the ancient syndicate code. The older captains who had previously supported Vincenzo backed away from him as if he were carrying a contagious plague.
Vincenzo leaped out of the chair, his hand darting inside his tailored coat to draw his concealed pistol, but Lorenzo was faster. With explosive speed, Lorenzo seized Vincenzo by the lapels, lifting the older man completely off his feet and slamming him down onto the heavy mahogany table with bone-crushing force. Lorenzo drew his own custom sidearm, pressing the cold steel barrel directly against the center of Vincenzo’s forehead before the traitor could even clear his holster. Vincenzo gasped for air, staring up into the eyes of the young man he had betrayed, his arrogance dissolving into pathetic, whimpering pleas for mercy. Lorenzo leaned in close, whispering into his ear so only the traitor could hear: the Queens ambush file had been decrypted, Dr. Meyer had been arrested in Zurich by Swiss authorities, and Vincenzo’s empire of deceit was officially dead.
