Chapter 8 - Bloodlines and Boardrooms

By midnight, the storm had passed, leaving Saratoga blanketed in crisp autumn mist. The cleanup at the Sinclair was handled with chilling efficiency by Ventresca's crews; by the time city officials woke up, the incident was categorized as an electrical explosion during demolition work. Moretti's syndicate was effectively dismantled in a single night, its leadership shattered, its territory absorbed.

In the private study of the Ventresca family estate in the Adirondacks, the fire crackled in the hearth.

Carmela Ventresca sat in a high-backed velvet armchair, her silver hair styled impeccably, sipping espresso from a porcelain cup. Across from her sat Margaret Hartwell, nervously twisting a diamond tennis bracelet around her wrist. Sophie and Luca sat on the leather sofa, holding hands tightly.

The double doors swung open.

Rocco entered, his left arm professionally bandaged under a fresh charcoal suit jacket. Beside him, with her head held high and her shoulders back, walked Evelyn. She wore a tailored forest-green dress that hugged her curves unapologetically, her hair falling in glossy waves past her shoulders.

Margaret gasped, standing up immediately. "Evelyn! Where have you been? Do you have any idea the humiliation I endured when you disappeared from the banquet? Martin Colby waited for two hours!"

"Sit down, Margaret," Carmela said smoothly, setting her cup down with a sharp clink.

Margaret blinked, startled by the matriarch's tone, and slowly sank back into her chair.

Carmela turned her sharp, aristocratic gaze onto Evelyn. For years, Carmela had been the undisputed gatekeeper of the Ventresca legacy—ruthless, calculating, and obsessed with bloodline and power.

"They tell me you cut the main power grid to an eight-story building in the middle of a firefight," Carmela said, her voice measuring every syllable. "And that you took out one of Moretti's enforcers with a piece of plumbing pipe."

Evelyn didn't back down. She met Carmela's gaze squarely. "It was an iron gas pipe, Mrs. Ventresca. And he was trying to kill your son."

Silence fell over the room. Sophie held her breath. Margaret looked like she might faint.

Carmela's stern expression held for three long seconds. Then, the corners of her mouth curved into a satisfied, razor-sharp smile.

"Good," Carmela nodded once. "The last girl Rocco brought home cried when a waiter dropped a fork. We don't have room for ornamental women in this family."

She turned her eyes to Rocco. "Bianca's father called an hour ago to concede the Newark shipping routes. He apologized for his nephew's insolence."

"He apologized because he knows what happens if he doesn't," Rocco said coldly. He stepped forward, his right hand moving to the small of Evelyn's back, pulling her firmly to his side. "And while we're clearing the air, let's make one thing explicitly understood."

Rocco's gaze swept over the entire room, stopping deliberately on Margaret Hartwell.

"Evelyn is not marrying Martin Colby," Rocco announced, his voice carrying the finality of iron. "She is not being auctioned off to whatever respectable bore you think will make up for your social anxieties. If anyone in this town has an opinion on her life, her business, or her weight, they can come discuss it with me directly."

Margaret's mouth fell open, completely speechless.

Luca smiled broadly, nudging Sophie.

Rocco looked down at Evelyn, his harsh features softening into an expression reserved only for her. "Her workshop is receiving the full restoration contract for every historical property owned by Ventresca Enterprises. Starting with the Sinclair."

"Rocco," Evelyn murmured, overwhelmed.

"And," Rocco continued, turning back to Carmela, "she's moving into the penthouse permanently."

Carmela raised an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine respect in her eyes. "Well, Evelyn. It seems you've accomplished something no one else in New York could do."

May you like

"What's that?" Evelyn asked.

"You managed to tame my eldest son without even using a whip."
