Chapter 2 - The Facade Cracks Wide Open

""You can't kick us out of a dinner party, Alex!"" Jennifer shrieked, slamming her designer purse onto the mahogany dining table. Her voice was shrill, cutting through the heavy tension like a rusty saw. ""We are Marcus’s family! We brought the catered tenderloin! We organized this entire milestone celebration for your father! You are being an ungrateful, spiteful little brat just because your own life is a miserable failure!""

""Jennifer, shut up,"" Marcus hissed through gritted teeth, though his eyes never left the paperwork on the table. He was sweating through his tailored linen button-down, dark patches blooming under his arms.

I looked at my brother, watching the gears turn in his desperate mind. Marcus wasn't just upset that his grand announcement had been ruined; he looked genuinely terrified, the kind of terror that only strikes a man whose entire house of cards is about to come tumbling down. If Marcus was simply planning to buy a big suburban house with an in-law suite, losing out on our parents' house would be a minor inconvenience. He claimed his real estate brokerage was thriving. He claimed he was pulling in high six-figure commissions. Why would the sale of an eight-hundred-thousand-dollar house make him look like a cornered animal?

""You know, Marcus,"" I said, leaning casually against the doorframe, ""I received another interesting document from James Morrison when he pulled the title records.""

Marcus’s head snapped toward me. His eyes dilated with pure panic. ""Alex, don't. Whatever you think you know, just shut your mouth.""

""What's going on, Marcus?"" Dad asked, lifting his head. The shame in his eyes was slowly giving way to confusion and hurt. ""What is your sister talking about?""

""Nothing, Dad! She’s just trying to stir up drama and ruin your birthday!"" Marcus insisted, stepping forward and attempting to grab my wrist, but I stepped back cleanly out of his reach.

""James noticed an active commercial lien application pending against this property address,"" I told the room, projecting my voice so every single aunt, uncle, and cousin could hear every syllable. ""Filed three weeks ago by Apex Capital Lending. The applicant listed was Hamilton Development Group—Marcus's company. He tried to take out a four-hundred-thousand-dollar bridge loan against this house using Dad’s name as a co-signer, assuming Dad still owned the title.""

A collective gasp rippled through the room. Aunt Carol gasped so hard she choked on her wine.

""You did what?!"" Dad roared, standing up so abruptly that his heavy wooden chair crashed backward onto the hardwood floor. He didn't look like a frail cardiac patient anymore; the color had rushed back into his face, driven by pure, righteous fury. ""Marcus! You tried to mortgage my house behind my back?!""

""Dad, listen to me, it was just temporary leverage!"" Marcus pleaded, holding his hands up defensively. ""The commercial market had a minor downtown slump. I have a massive condominium project in the riverfront district that’s ninety percent finished. The bank froze our construction line of credit because of supply chain overruns! I just needed a short-term cash infusion to pay the concrete contractors before they filed a mechanic’s lien on my company!""

""So you were never going to buy us a house in the suburbs,"" Mom whispered, her hands trembling as she looked at her golden child as if he were a complete stranger. ""You weren't building an in-law suite with a pool for your children. You were going to take the equity from the home we lived in for thirty years to bail out your failing business!""

""I was going to pay it back!"" Marcus yelled, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. ""Once the condos sold, we would have made millions! We all would have won! But now, because this selfish bitch bought the house out from under us, Apex rejected the bridge loan application this afternoon! The contractors are walking off the job on Monday morning! Do you have any idea what that means?!""

""It means you lied to everyone,"" I answered coldly. ""You sat at that table, laughed in my face, called me a loser, and told me to get out on the street within five days, all while planning to steal the only thing our parents had left in this world to save your own neck.""

Jennifer turned toward Marcus, her face pale and twisted with disgust. ""Marcus... tell me you didn't risk our personal savings on that development. You told me the company finances were completely separate! You told me we were buying that five-bedroom colonial in Oakridge!""

May you like

""Keep your mouth shut, Jennifer!"" Marcus snapped at his wife, losing control entirely.

""Don't you dare talk to her like that in my house!"" Dad thundered, his hand pointing toward the front door. ""Get out. Get out of this house right now, Marcus. Both of you!""
