Chapter 8 - The Syndicate's Collapse

The arrest in my garage was only the first domino in an international law enforcement sweep coordinated across four countries.
While Daniel was being transported in federal custody to the central holding facility in Phoenix, federal agents raided Falcon Field.
The private Gulfstream jet from Munich was surrounded on the tarmac by Homeland Security and FBI SWAT teams before its engines even cooled.
Inside the aircraft, agents arrested Victor Sterling, a corrupt Swiss transplant surgeon, and three private security mercenaries.
They also seized three liquid-nitrogen organ transport coolers and over four million dollars in bearer bonds and unmarked cryptocurrency keys.
Simultaneously, Interpol units raided private surgical clinics in Nassau and Zurich, padlocking facilities that had operated in shadows for a decade.
At federal headquarters, the depth of Daniel's criminal history was laid bare across three conference tables covered in evidence files.
His real name was Daniel Vance, age thirty-four, wanted in three European nations for clinical fraud and human trafficking.
I was not his first victim; over eight years, he had targeted four other wealthy, older women possessing rare blood antigens across North America.
Two of those women had died of 'sudden postoperative complications' in foreign hospitals, their estates looted by Vance's shell companies.
The other two had survived, left physically crippled and financially ruined, completely unaware that their organs had been harvested for profit.
Daniel had used his looks, his charm, and a fabricated fortune to build a hunting ground where vulnerability was turned into cash.
Detective Miller brought me a hot cup of black coffee inside the private witness briefing room at six o'clock the following morning.
"The U.S. Attorney has filed sixty-two felony counts against Vance, Margaret," Miller reported, sitting across from me.
"Aggravated kidnapping, attempted murder, human organ trafficking, and conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud.
He is looking at three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole at ADX Florence."
I took a sip of the hot coffee, feeling the warm liquid soothe my raw throat.
"What about the mansion? The money?"
"The mansion, the cars, and the bank accounts were funded entirely through illicit organ broker fees," Miller explained.
"Under the Federal Civil Asset Forfeiture Act, the government is liquidating the entire Vance estate.
The proceeds are being established as a dedicated victim restitution fund—with seventy percent allocated directly to you and the surviving victims."

I closed my eyes, leaning back into the plastic office chair, letting out a long, shuddering breath.
The nightmare was finally over; the butcher was locked inside a steel cage, and the truth had conquered the dark.
