Chapter 3 - The First Fracture

The morning cold cut through Gregory Wallace’s wool trench coat as he stepped out of Lakecrest Medical Center’s executive entrance. His shift had ended with a satisfying sense of control. He had signed Clara Rossi’s temporary suspension order, sent an email to HR framing her as verbally combative and physically aggressive, and deleted the initial incident report submitted by the respiratory therapist.

Sure, there was that pesky ceiling camera. But Gregory was already friends with Miller, the head of internal security. A couple hundred bucks or a bottle of single malt scotch, and that hard drive would suffer a tragic magnetic malfunction before the morning board arrived.

""Stupid girl,"" Gregory muttered to himself, pulling his leather gloves snug over his hands as he walked toward his reserved parking space. ""Should have kept her mouth shut and cleaned the damn room.""

He reached into his pocket for his key fob, aiming it at his sleek, graphite-colored BMW M5. He clicked the unlock button.

Nothing happened.

Gregory frowned, stepping closer. ""Come on, cheap battery...""

He clicked it again. Still no response.

When he walked around to the driver's side, he froze.

All four tires were completely flat, their sidewalls professionally sliced with surgical precision. But that wasn’t what made Gregory’s heart skip a beat.

Tucked under the windshield wiper was an envelope. A heavy, linen envelope of midnight blue, sealed with crimson wax.

""What kind of juvenile prank..."" Gregory cursed under his breath, reaching forward and snatching the envelope. He tore it open with shaking, cold fingers.

Inside was not a letter.

It was a high-resolution, glossy photograph.

It showed Gregory’s hand suspended in mid-air, inches away from Clara Rossi’s face, captured from an angle that didn't exist on Lakecrest’s official security feeds. It was taken from an elevated, professional vantage point.

Written across the bottom of the photograph in neat, gold calligraphy were seven simple words:

Every debt is collected with interest, Gregory.

Gregory felt an electric shock of pure panic jolt through his spine. He looked around wildly, his eyes scanning the quiet, gray morning parking lot. A few nurses were walking toward the staff entrance with coffee cups; an ambulance backed into the bay two hundred yards away. Everything looked normal.

Except for a black town car idling silently near the parking gate, its windows tinted completely opaque.

As Gregory stared at it, the driver’s side window rolled down an inch. A puff of cigar smoke drifted into the freezing air, followed by a hand pointing two fingers toward Gregory—mimicking a gun—before the window rolled back up and the car slid smoothly into the street traffic.

""Crazy homeless punks,"" Gregory spat aloud, trying to force his voice to sound steady, but his knees were trembling. He jammed the photograph into his coat pocket. ""She told her little boyfriend. That's all this is. Some punk street kid from her neighborhood trying to scare me.""

He pulled out his smartphone to call an Uber, but as soon as the screen unlocked, a series of urgent notification banners flashed across his display.

Alert: Chase Bank - Unusual Activity Detected.

Alert: Vanguard Employee Portal - Password Reset Initiated.

Voicemail (3): Arthur Pendelton.

Gregory’s thumbs fumbled as he dialed his cousin Arthur’s direct line. It rang only half a second before Arthur picked up, breathing heavily, his voice stripped of its usual smooth corporate veneer.

""Gregory! What the hell did you do?!"" Arthur bellowed through the speaker.

""Arthur? What are you talking about? Some idiot slashed my tires—""

""Shut up! Shut your mouth!"" Arthur screamed, coughing violently. ""The state licensing board just froze our surgical center's operating permits! And First Continental Bank just triggered an emergency compliance review on our seventy-million-dollar municipal bond! The board of directors is convening an emergency session in Chicago at two o'clock today, and my name is on every single executive sponsor document for your hospital!""

Gregory felt all the blood drain from his face. ""Arthur, that’s impossible! Those are standard financial structures, they can't just freeze—""

""They did freeze! And the auditor sent a preliminary note mentioning gross administrative misconduct and institutional cover-ups at Lakecrest! Did you do something last night, Gregory? Did you touch someone you shouldn't have?!""

Gregory swallowed, the metallic taste of pure dread filling his mouth. ""Arthur... it was just a nurse. A pregnant nurse. She was insubordinate, she came at me, and I—""

A dead silence fell over the line.

""You struck a pregnant woman?"" Arthur’s voice was suddenly very quiet, trembling with disbelief.

""She pushed me! She provoked me in front of the entire staff!""

""You idiot,"" Arthur whispered, his voice trembling. ""You arrogant, incompetent idiot. You just destroyed my career. If my name gets dragged into this, I will feed you to the wolves myself. Get to Lakecrest’s administrative boardroom right now. The CEO just called an all-hands meeting. And pray to God you have an alibi.""

May you like

The line went dead.

Gregory stood in the freezing wind, his breath coming in ragged gasps, clutching his dead phone as the cold seeped deep into his bones.
