Chapter 10 - The Garden of Rossi

One year later, the sun shone warmly over the sprawling back lawn of the Evanston estate.

A gentle breeze rustled the willow trees, carrying the scent of blooming hydrangeas and roasting meats from the outdoor brick patio. Soft Italian jazz played from concealed garden speakers, mingling with the sound of laughter and clinking wine glasses.

Dozens of off-duty nurses, doctors, and firefighters from Engine Company 42 were scattered across the lawn, sitting at long wooden banquet tables laden with fresh pasta, grilled steaks, and chilled prosecco.

In the center of the garden, little Victoria—now a chubby, giggling one-year-old with wide, curious eyes—was unsteadily chasing a golden retriever puppy across the manicured grass.

Clara stood by the patio railing, holding a glass of sparkling water, looking out over her friends and family. She wore a breezy linen summer dress, her hair flowing freely, the ghost of the old bruise entirely gone, replaced by the deep, radiant peace of a mother who knew her child was safe.

Dominic walked up beside her, holding a glass of vintage Chianti. He wore a crisp white linen shirt with open collar, looking completely relaxed, stripped of the dark, suffocating armor he usually wore in the city.

""Good party, little sister,"" Dominic remarked, resting his arm affectionately around her shoulders.

""You invited the entire fire company, Dom,"" Clara laughed, shaking her head. ""And half the third-floor ICU staff. The hospital had to bring in registry nurses just to cover the day shift.""

""I paid the registry fees,"" Dominic smiled smoothly. ""The people who stood by you deserve to eat well. That’s how logistics works.""

Clara turned to him, her expression turning tender and serious. She reached up, resting her hand against his cheek.

""Thank you, Dominic.""

Dominic looked down at her, the warmth in his dark eyes deeper than the ocean. ""You never have to thank me for keeping my promise, Clara. Mom gave me one job: make sure the world never breaks you.""

At that moment, little Victoria tumbled gently onto the soft clover, squealing with laughter as the golden retriever puppy licked her cheeks.

""Uncle Dom!"" Victoria babbled, pointing her tiny finger toward him and waving frantically. ""Dom! Up!""

Dominic laughed—a rich, full, joyful sound that echoed across the sunlit yard. He set his wine glass on the stone balustrade and jogged down the garden steps, scooping his niece high into the warm afternoon sky while she shrieked with pure, untainted delight.

Clara watched them against the backdrop of the bright, open sky.

The shadows of that freezing Tuesday morning were gone forever. The bully was forgotten, swallowed by the justice he had provoked. Here, in the warm light of the family Dominic had fought so ruthlessly to protect, love had built a fortress that would never fall again."
