Chapter 4 - Freezing The Throne

The silence in the Plaza ballroom was so thick you could hear the ice melting in two hundred crystal glasses.

Mrs. Vale dropped her champagne flute. The crystal shattered across the parquet floor, golden liquid soaking into the hem of her emerald Valentino gown. “What is the meaning of this obscene display?” she shrieked, marching toward me with her chin jutting out. “Security! Get this woman out of my sight! How dare you show your common face here after we dismissed you?”

Two federal marshals stepped forward, their bodies forming an impenetrable wall between Mrs. Vale and me.

“Victoria Vale?” Agent Vance said, pulling a laminated badge from his breast pocket. “Step back immediately. Do not approach the witness.”

“Witness?” Richard Vale barked, pushing his way down from the dais. His gold cufflinks flashed beneath the chandelier light, but his eyes were darting toward the exits. “Do you have any idea who I am? I know the governor! I know the attorney general! You cannot barge into a private family gathering without—”

“Richard Vale, Adrian Vale,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Miller interrupted, pulling a thick stack of red-stamped documents from his briefcase. “As of two o'clock this afternoon, the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York has issued warrants for your immediate arrest on seventy-four counts of grand larceny, wire fraud, racketeering, and international tax evasion.”

A collective gasp swept through the room. Billionaires, socialites, and foreign dignitaries recoiled as if the dais had caught fire. Adrian’s hand shook so violently that the microphone slipped from his fingers, crashing onto the carpet with a dull, booming thud that resonated through the speakers.

“This is a mistake!” Adrian stammered, his eyes darting frantically between his father and the feds. His gaze finally landed on me, wide with terrified realization. “Clara... Clara, what did you do? You swore you loved me!”

“I loved the man I thought you were, Adrian,” I said, stepping past Agent Vance until I was standing just ten feet from the stage. “I loved the man who claimed he wanted to protect innocent people. But you didn’t want a wife. You wanted a scapegoat. You wanted my credentials to launder fifty-four million dollars from your workers’ pension fund.”

“You lying little gutter rat!” Mrs. Vale hissed, lunging forward with her manicured nails bared. A female marshal caught her wrist instantly, twisting it behind her back and forcing her against a linen-draped table. The floral centerpiece toppled, spilling water and white orchids over her designer dress. “Richard, do something! Call our lawyers!”

“Their phones are already ringing, Mrs. Vale,” I said calmly. “And their offices are currently being sealed by the FBI.”

Richard Vale lunged toward Adrian, his face turning a deep, dangerous purple. “You idiot! You told me she was completely oblivious! You told me she was just a pathetic little numbers clerk who would do whatever you said!”

“Dad, stop!” Adrian pleaded, backing away until his heels hit the back wall of the stage. “She... she audited the private drives! She must have broken through my encryptions!”

“You gave me the password yourself, Adrian,” I said, my voice cutting through his panic like a scalpel. “You thought I was too stupid to understand what I was seeing. You and your family looked at my cheap clothes, my secondhand shoes, and my quiet manners, and you assumed I had no teeth. You were wrong.”

Federal marshals climbed onto the dais. Click. The sound of steel handcuffs locking around Adrian Vale’s wrists was louder to my ears than any wedding vow could have ever been.

Adrian looked at his wrists, then looked at me, tears finally spilling over his cheeks. “Clara, please... I’m sorry. I had to listen to my mother! She said you weren't good enough for our social circle! I didn't want to hurt you!”

“You didn’t hurt me, Adrian,” I replied, feeling a profound, liberating weight lift from my shoulders. “You set me free. And unlike you, I pay for what I take.”

As the agents led Richard and Adrian Vale past the silent, horrified crowd in handcuffs, Mrs. Vale was escorted out behind them, weeping hysterically as press photographers—tipped off by June—stormed the hotel entrance, flashes lighting up her ruin.
