Chapter 10 - The Road Ahead

Six months later, the early morning sun rose over a quiet stretch of Route 75 outside Dayton, Ohio.

The old Freightliner was gone, sold to an independent hauler out of Missouri who promised to treat her right. In its place stood a brick workshop with three wide service bays, the doors painted a crisp, forest green. A painted wooden sign hung above the main entrance, swinging gently in the morning breeze: Viper Recon Restorations & Mechanics.

Inside, the smell of fresh motor oil, brake fluid, and strong drip coffee filled the clean air. On the workbench near the front window rested a framed certificate from the Department of the Army, officially confirming the award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Master Sergeant John Carter, United States Army, Retired. Beside it sat a photo of Tommy Mercer, grinning in his desert fatigues, his thumb hooked in the strap of his rifle.

A sharp tap on the glass door interrupted my inventory check.

I looked up to see a young woman in uniform standing on the front threshold. Second Lieutenant Emma Carter, home on her first block of leave before her deployment to Germany. She looked taller, filled out with the quiet, assured confidence of an officer who had already earned the loyalty of her squad.

""Shop open for business, Sergeant?"" she called out, leaning against the doorframe with a wide grin.

""Only for lieutenants who know how to change their own spark plugs,"" I called back, tossing a clean rag over my shoulder.

Emma walked into the bay, her boots echoing against the sealed concrete floor, and wrapped her arms around my neck in a fierce, suffocating hug. I held on tight, breathing in the fresh air of home, feeling no ache in my chest for the open highway. The ghosts had finally stopped following me.

""How does it feel to stay in one place?"" she asked, pulling back to look at my face.

I looked around the bright shop, through the open bays toward the green fields beyond the fence, and let out a long, quiet breath that had been held for twenty-four years.

""It feels,"" I smiled, squeezing her shoulder, ""like the mission's finally complete."""
