Chapter 7 - A Name Restored

Ramos took custody of Vance, hauling him to his feet and leading him out toward the waiting patrol car parked along the curb, where curious neighbors were already beginning to gather on their porches. I walked back toward the kitchen doorway and leaned over the basement stairs. ""Liam,"" I called out gently, keeping my tone warm and relaxed. ""It's safe now, buddy. You can come up."" Slowly, two small tennis shoes appeared on the bottom step, followed by the boy's oversized jacket. He climbed the stairs with cautious, deliberate steps, stopping at the kitchen doorway to look at the shattered mug and the open front door. Outside, the red and blue emergency lights flashed rhythmically across the white ceiling of the living room. ""He's gone?"" Liam asked, his voice barely louder than a whisper. ""He's gone,"" I confirmed, dropping to one knee so we were at eye level. ""He isn't coming back here, and you are never going back to that cellar."" I held up the faded photograph from the manila folder. ""Detectives are running your mother's name through the state database right now. We're going to find out where you come from, Liam. The real story. Not the lies he told you."" For the first time all afternoon, the rigid, guarded expression on the boy's face began to fracture. A single tear rolled down his dusty cheek, carving a clean line through the grime. He reached out and wrapped his small arms around my neck, burying his face into the heavy wool of my uniform jacket. His shoulders shook with silent, overdue sobs—years of terror, loneliness, and enforced silence finally washing away in the safety of a promise kept. I wrapped an arm around him, shielding him from the view of the street as the medical team walked up the front steps with a warm blanket.
