Chapter 10 - The Last Walk Home

Three months later, the spring sun was shining warm over the front lawn of Evergreen Elementary. The cherry blossoms along Cedar Street had bloomed in thick clusters of pink and white, scattering petals across the clean sidewalks. Dismissal bell rang with its familiar, energetic chime, and within seconds, the front doors burst open with children laughing, carrying art projects, and racing toward the pickup line. I stood by the front steps in my patrol uniform, watching the parents wave from their cars, the familiar rhythm of the school day unfolding exactly as it was meant to. A blue station wagon with Washington license plates pulled smoothly into the visitor parking space near the main crosswalk. The passenger door swung open, and Liam stepped out onto the sidewalk. He looked taller, his uneven buzz cut grown out into a neat, healthy head of brown hair, wearing a clean backpack that fit his shoulders perfectly. His mother stepped out of the driver's side, walking alongside him with a warm, relaxed smile that reached all the way to her eyes. When Liam spotted me standing near the flagpole, his face lit up with an enormous, toothy grin—the kind of real, unburdened smile I had never seen on that dark porch three months ago. He ran ahead across the grass, stopping right in front of my duty boots. ""Officer Dunham!"" he beamed, holding out a small wooden plaque crafted with carefully painted green letters that read: Evergreen Elementary Junior Deputy. ""We're moving back into our new house in Spokane next week, but Mom said I couldn't leave without walking you down the block one last time."" Clara walked up beside us, extending her hand to shake mine, her eyes shining with quiet, profound gratitude that no words could ever fully capture. ""Lead the way, Deputy Thomas,"" I said, adjusting my patrol cap and stepping falling into step beside him. We walked together down Cedar Street beneath the warm afternoon sun, past the tidy yards and blooming gardens, heading toward a bright, open horizon where no child ever had to be afraid of the door in front of him again."
