Chapter 1 - The Question Across the Table

"Did you choose to stay?"

The question hung suspended in the chilled air of the penthouse dining room. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass, Manhattan hummed with morning traffic, unaware of the quiet execution taking place forty-two stories above.

Vincent Hale did not blink. His posture was rigid, tailored in a charcoal suit that looked pristine despite the transatlantic red-eye flight.

"I didn't think he would arrive that fast," Vincent said, his voice dropping into that low, gravelly timbre he used when cornered. "First labors last eighteen, twenty-four hours. I thought I had time."

"That is not what I asked," Claire said, leaning forward. Her voice was steady, but her knuckles were white against the polished walnut table.

"I gave it a few hours," he admitted, the words tasting like ash on his tongue. "I wanted to clear the logistics. I wanted to handle Serena cleanly before I stepped on that plane."

"You chose to sleep with her while your son tore his way into this world," Claire said.

The blunt brutality of the sentence made Vincent's jaw clench. A dark flush crept up his collar, past the stubble on his throat.

"Don't reduce seven years to one mistake, Claire," he warned, his voice taking on the dangerous edge that usually made grown men tremble in boardrooms. "I built this entire life for you. Every terminal, every square foot of this penthouse, every single dime in your trust funds."

"You built it for yourself," Claire said softly, turning her head toward the bassinet by the window.

Inside the bassinet, Owen stirred, his tiny four-pound body barely creating a hollow in the white blankets. He let out a soft, kitten-like whimper that immediately commanded Claire's entire focus.

She stood up slowly, her stitches pulling with a sharp, burning reminder of the night she had spent alone. She walked past Vincent without looking at him, bending down to lift her son against her chest.

Vincent stood too, his large frame towering over the small nursery corner. He reached out one hand, his fingers hesitating inches above Owen's dark curls.

"Let me take him, Claire," Vincent whispered, a crack finally showing in his hardened exterior. "He's my blood. Let me carry my boy."

Claire took two deliberate steps backward, clutching Owen tighter against her clavicle.

"You don't get to touch him, Vincent," she said.

"I am his father!" Vincent snapped, his control splintering as his chest heaved. "You don't get to erase me because I made a mistake thousands of miles away! I am the head of this family!"

"There is no family here," Claire said, looking directly into his cold, gray eyes. "Just a man who buys sapphire bracelets to pay off his sins."

She reached into her cardigan pocket and pulled out a folded legal document. She dropped it on the dining table right next to the blue velvet box.

"You have twenty-four hours to sign the preliminary separation terms," Claire said. "Or my attorneys file the full disclosure on Hale Meridian Logistics with the Southern District of New York."

Vincent froze, his pupils dilating in sheer disbelief. "You wouldn't dare."

"Try me, Vincent," Claire whispered. "A woman who delivers a baby alone in the dark has nothing left to fear from you."
