Chapter 6 - The Legal Counter-Attack

The following morning, the waiting room of the Marion County courthouse smelled faintly of old floor wax and stale coffee. I sat on a hard wooden bench clutching a thick leather portfolio containing every piece of documentation Rachel had requested, my mind racing with a mix of dread and vindictive determination. Noah was safely enrolled in a temporary local kindergarten program just down the block, mercifully shielded from the ugly legal warfare playing out downtown. Rachel walked briskly through the double doors, her tailored navy blazer looking sharp and authoritative as she headed straight toward me with a resolute expression. “The judge reviewed Grant’s doorbell footage in chambers less than twenty minutes ago,” she whispered quietly, taking a seat beside me. “He signed an immediate protective order suspending all of Derek’s visitation rights pending a full criminal investigation by the state prosecutor's office.” A profound wave of physical relief washed over me, so intense my knees briefly went weak beneath my wool skirt. Derek’s carefully constructed web of lies was beginning to unravel at a breathtaking pace under the harsh light of undeniable digital proof. Yet, I knew from the bitter set of his jaw during our brief, distant encounters at previous administrative hearings that he would not go down quietly. He had spent years building a respectable public facade as a successful local financial consultant, and the thought of losing his social standing—and more importantly, his control over our assets—would drive him to desperate measures. Rachel warned me to remain vigilant, noting that his defense counsel would likely try to paint the video footage as manipulated or out of context. We needed to secure formal witness depositions from both Grant Ellis and the first responding firefighter who had pulled us from the roof to lock down our case permanently. As we stepped out onto the sunlit courthouse steps, a familiar black SUV was idling near the curb. Derek sat behind the wheel, his cold eyes locking onto mine through the tinted driver's side window. He did not yell or gesture this time; he simply stared with a look of pure, unadulterated malice that sent a shiver straight down my spine. I gripped Rachel’s leather portfolio tightly against my chest, squared my shoulders, and refused to look away first.
