Chapter 9 - The Vow in the Snow

By March, the snow began to thaw along the Wisconsin hills, revealing patches of green moss and early spring blooms.

The war was over. Chicago had settled into an unprecedented era of peace under Dominic's undisputed rule. But we didn't return to Bellano Tower. Dominic handed over the day-to-day operations of the shipping terminals to his most loyal capos, transitioning the vast majority of the Bellano portfolio into legitimate global logistics and hospitality.

He was done living in the shadows. He had something infinitely more precious to build for.

At twenty-four weeks, my pregnancy was undeniable. A distinct, round bump pushed against my soft knit dresses, and every evening, Dominic would kneel on the floor by the fireplace, resting his cheek against my belly, listening to the small kicks that made Chicago's most terrifying don smile with childlike wonder.

"A boy," the doctor had confirmed the week before.

"He kicks like a fighter," Dominic murmured one evening, his large warm hands cupping my stomach gently.

"He's going to be an architect," I teased, running my fingers through Dominic's thick, dark hair. "Or a teacher. No weapons, Dominic. That was our deal."

"He will be whatever you want him to be, Penny," Dominic looked up at me, his dark eyes filled with a tenderness that still made my breath hitch. "He will never know the sound of gunfire. I swear that on my life."

The next afternoon, Dominic led me out to the stone terrace overlooking the frozen lake. A simple wooden arch wrapped in white roses and ivy stood against the backdrop of towering pines.

There were no reporters, no syndicate bosses, and no political allies.

Only a local judge, two close security guards who had saved my life in the alleyway, and a small acoustic violin playing softly in the crisp mountain air.

Dominic stood waiting for me, wearing a simple tailored charcoal suit without a single weapon hidden beneath the fabric. When he took my hands, his fingers were warm and steady.

"Four years ago, you walked into my office with a notepad and an unreadable expression," Dominic spoke his vows, his voice resonant and thick with emotion. "You kept my chaos organized, but more than that, you were the only piece of light in a world that was consuming me whole. I was too arrogant to admit that I loved you long before that night in the penthouse."

Tears blurred my vision, warm and sweet, as I looked at the man who had faced down an army just to bring me ginger tea.

"You gave me a reason to fight for a future, Penelope," he whispered, sliding a platinum band encrusted with diamonds onto my finger. "My life, my fortune, and my heart belong entirely to you and our son. Forever."

"Forever, Dominic," I said, sliding his ring onto his hand. "In this life and whatever comes next."

May you like

When his lips met mine, the last lingering shadows of fear melted away, replaced by an unbreakable promise of peace.
