Chapter 4 - The Board Proxy

Delaney took another frantic step toward the stage, her voice trembling with hysteria.

"You have no proof! You’re standing on a stage making wild accusations because you have nothing left!"

"She doesn't need to prove it to you, Delaney," a deep voice rumbled across the ballroom.

Nolan Reed stepped up to the microphone beside me, placing his hand gently on the wooden podium.

He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer weight of his presence commanded absolute silence from every corner of the room.

"As majority shareholder of the First Atlantic Financial Group, I called an emergency meeting of the Heartwell Commercial Trust board at six o'clock this evening," Nolan announced.

Lorraine Heartwell’s face went gray, her fingers gripping her pearl necklace so tightly the string snapped, sending pearls skittering across the floor like marble hail.

"You did what?" Lorraine gasped.

"The Heartwell family no longer holds majority voting rights on the commercial loans," Nolan explained smoothly, his eyes sweeping the frozen assembly.

"Your grandson Spencer pledged sixty percent of your family's collateral shares to cover his offshore gambling liabilities. I bought those debts at par value forty minutes before I arrived tonight."

Gasps of disbelief tore through the ballroom.

Bankers pulled out their phones, frantically checking real-time market updates and confidential syndicate portals.

Spencer sank to his knees beside his grandmother's table, clutching his head in both hands, weeping openly.

"You destroyed us," Lorraine whispered, leaning heavily against the back of her chair as her social kingdom crumbled to dust in front of four hundred witnesses.

"No, Mrs. Heartwell," Nolan said coldly. "Your arrogance and your grandson’s greed destroyed you. You believed you could use this ridiculous bride selection to humiliate an honorable young woman and steal her inheritance."

Nolan turned his dark eyes toward my father, who was staring at the floor in profound, unrecoverable defeat.

"Dennis Sutton, your board has already convened via emergency video conference," Nolan continued.

"By unanimous vote of the institutional shareholders, you and your son Leo have been removed from all executive management positions at Sutton Hotels effective immediately."

My father didn't speak.

He couldn't.

He sat slumped in the gilt ballroom chair, stripped of his authority, his reputation, and the empire he had tried to save through cowardice.

Nolan looked down at me, his gaze softening with profound, unspoken admiration.

"River Sutton," he said, turning the microphone slightly toward me. "The floor is yours."
