Chapter 9 - The Trap Springs

General Arthur Vance stepped out from the shadows of the dining room, flanked by four federal tactical operators armed with suppressed submachine guns. Behind them, through the shattered front windows of the farmhouse, red and blue emergency strobes erupted across the front pasture as twelve unmarked law enforcement vehicles cut their high beams, completely encircling the property.

Senator Sterling’s two personal bodyguards instinctively reached for their weapons, but before their hands could even clear their holsters, the laser sights of six carbines locked onto their chests.

""Drop the sidearms! Hands on your heads! DOWN ON THE FLOOR NOW!"" the federal agents roared.

The bodyguards froze, realized the tactical futility of their position, and slowly lowered their weapons onto the floorboards before dropping to their knees with their hands laced behind their heads.

Sterling’s cigarette slipped from his fingers, falling onto the hardwood floor and smoldering against the varnish. The arrogant smirk vanished from his face, replaced by a sudden, sickening pallor.

""Vance?"" Sterling choked out, his voice losing every ounce of its practiced television cadence. ""What is the meaning of this? I am the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee! You have no jurisdictional authority to ambush me in a civilian jurisdiction!""

""I don't have jurisdiction, Douglas,"" Vance said, walking forward with a heavy, deliberate tread. ""But Director Hayes of the Federal Bureau of Investigation does.""

A woman in a sharp civilian trench coat stepped into the doorway, holding up a laminated federal credential alongside a thick stack of unsealed legal warrants.

""Senator Douglas Sterling,"" Director Hayes announced, her voice echoing clearly through the ruined farmhouse. ""By order of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, I have warrants for your immediate arrest on charges of high treason, racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and the unauthorized transfer of military assets to a hostile foreign entity.""

""This is an outrage! This is an unconstitutional coup!"" Sterling shouted, his face turning an apoplectic shade of purple as two federal agents stepped forward, roughly twisting his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. ""You have no evidence! You have the ramblings of a traumatized, disgraced clerk and forged documents from an unauthorized black operation!""

I stood up from Marcus's leather chair, holding the open Pelican case in one hand.

With my other hand, I tapped the small, blinking lapel microphone pinned to the collar of my torn olive T-shirt.

""Every word you spoke in this room for the last ten minutes was broadcast live over an encrypted secure link directly to the House Oversight Committee, the Attorney General's war room, and the Judge Advocate General's office,"" I said, walking slowly toward him until our eyes were inches apart. ""You confessed to the Helmand ambush. You confessed to financing Apex Vanguard. You confessed to murdering eleven American soldiers.""

Sterling stared at the blinking light on my collar, his jaw hanging slack, his eyes wide with absolute, unadulterated horror. The reality that he had walked into a televised legal guillotine shattered his mind.

""You..."" Sterling stammered, his knees beginning to buckle beneath the weight of his ruin. ""You planned this. From Fort Meridian... all of it.""

""No, Senator,"" I said coldly. ""Marcus Wright planned it three years ago when he put this case beneath his mother’s hearth. I just delivered the final report.""

Outside, the heavy thumping of multiple transport helicopters shook the night sky as state troopers, military police, and federal agents secured the entire county road, cutting off every escape route Sterling's private security network possessed.

The reign of Apex Vanguard was over. The conspiracy that had bathed in the blood of Raven Talon had finally run out of shadows.
