Chapter 7 - What the Ledger Was Hiding

Nobody slept at the storefront that night.

Brooks collected the brick, the veil, and the note. Nearby businesses provided security footage. A patrol car remained outside while a contractor boarded the broken window.

Vivian sat at the worktable until her hands stopped shaking.

Adrian arrived after she asked him to.

He paused in the doorway.

“Come in,” she said.

He looked at the broken glass.

Then he looked at her.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

He let out a breath.

She had expected anger. Orders. Promises that somebody would suffer.

Instead, he pulled out the chair opposite hers.

“What do you need?”

Vivian stared at him.

The same question had opened her bedroom door.

Now it opened something else.

“Stay until Rosa’s daughter picks us up.”

“I can do that.”

While they waited, Lena called with news from the trust administrator.

The wedding distribution had been frozen.

Preston would not receive a dollar.

Vivian shut her eyes.

A victory.

Small, late, and wonderful.

Then Lena continued.

“The ledger shows why your father needed this marriage.”

“Preston’s debt?”

“That was part of it. Winston had been using client escrow funds to cover losses in Montgomery Maritime. He needed fresh money before the annual audit.”

“How much?”

“More than your distribution.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“Was Preston’s redevelopment project ever viable?”

“Not according to the engineer’s reports investigators obtained.”

Vivian understood before Lena finished.

“The loan was never for a building.”

“It appears they used the project to move borrowed money into Winston’s company. Then your inheritance would cover Preston’s obligation.”

“And after fifteen million wasn’t enough?”

Nobody answered.

They did not have to.

Vivian remembered Preston discussing children.

A larger house.

A joint account because married couples should trust each other.

She pressed both feet to the floor.

“What about my mother?”

“She discovered the client funds,” Lena said. “The records on her drive match entries in the seized ledger.”

Adrian stared at the tabletop.

“I financed the hole they were trying to bury.”

“You didn’t know,” Vivian said.

“I didn’t ask enough.”

She could not argue with that.

The next morning, Adrian met with Lena and a separate criminal defense attorney. Vivian did not attend. She spent the time at the museum, speaking with her former supervisor about returning to work.

The supervisor hugged her only after asking.

Then she handed Vivian a damaged gilt frame.

“Start here when you’re ready.”

Vivian cried in the supply closet.

Later, Adrian came to the apartment.

“I’m cooperating,” he said.

“With Brooks?”

“With the financial investigators. Through my attorney. Records, collections, Declan’s old operations.”

“What does that mean for you?”

“Possibly charges. Certainly losing things I should never have kept.”

She looked at him for a long moment.

“Are you doing it because of me?”

“You made it harder to keep lying to myself. The choice is mine.”

That mattered.

More than flowers would have.

More than a promise.

She reached across the table and took his hand.

He did not close his fingers until she did.

Then her phone rang.

Brooks.

“We located Declan’s abandoned vehicle.”

Vivian sat upright.

“Did you find him?”

“No. But there was a storage key in the glove compartment. We obtained a warrant for the unit.”

Adrian’s hand tightened slightly.

“What was there?” Vivian asked.

“Your mother’s handbag. Her missing phone. Several vehicle parts.”

Vivian could hear her own breathing.

Brooks continued carefully.

“There’s also an audio file on the phone. We’re authenticating it.”

“Of what?”

“An argument between your mother and your father.”

Outside, a bus sighed at the curb.

Someone laughed on the sidewalk.

The world kept moving.

“What did he say?”

Brooks paused.

“Vivian, I want you to hear it here, with someone beside you.”

An hour later, she sat in an interview room while Lena took the chair next to hers.

The recording crackled.

Her mother’s voice filled the room.

“If anything happens to me, Winston, Vivian gets everything.”

May you like

Then her father answered.

“Not if I make sure she signs first.”
