Chapter 5 - The Confession Vincent Never Expected

Sophia was arrested forty miles outside Chicago.
She had paid a former boyfriend to hide her in his family’s lake house.
He turned her in after seeing the news.
Within hours, investigators recovered her laptop from a storage unit.
What they found changed everything.
Anna sat beside her attorney while federal investigators explained the evidence.
Sophia had kept records.
Payments.
Messages.
Search histories.
Even recordings.
“She recorded Vincent?” Anna asked.
The investigator nodded.
“Dozens of conversations.”
Vincent sat across the conference table.
His expression was unreadable.
“Play them.”
The investigator hesitated.
“Some involve private matters.”
“Play them.”
A recording began.
Sophia’s voice.
“You still love me.”
Vincent answered, “No.”
Anna looked at him.
Sophia laughed.
“You’re lying.”
“I’m married.”
“That didn’t answer me.”
“Yes, it did.”
The recording continued.
“I love Anna. Whatever existed between us ended years ago.”
Anna’s chest tightened.
She had spent three years imagining a thousand different versions of Vincent and Sophia.
In many of them, he had secretly loved Sophia.
The next recording was from days before the trip.
Sophia said, “Anna doesn’t like me.”
Vincent sounded irritated.
“She doesn’t trust why you keep appearing.”
“Do you?”
A pause.
“No.”
Another recording.
Sophia: “If you ever had to choose between us, who would it be?”
Vincent laughed softly.
“That’s a ridiculous question.”
“Answer.”
“My wife.”
Sophia’s voice hardened.
“You didn’t even think.”
“I shouldn’t have to.”
The recording ended.
Anna looked down.
Vincent did not try to use it to defend himself.
That mattered.
Then the investigator played one final file.
It had been recorded during the emergency.
Sophia’s frightened voice screamed through the speakers.
“Vincent! Help me!”
Then Anna’s voice.
“What about me?”
Everyone in the room became still.
Vincent’s recorded voice answered.
“I’m taking Sophia out first.”
Anna shut her eyes.
She knew what came next.
“I’m your wife.”
“I know.”
“I’m carrying your baby.”
“I know that, Anna.”
The recording stopped.
Vincent stood abruptly and walked toward the window.
Anna could see his shoulders shaking.
Nobody spoke.
Finally he said, “Keep playing.”
The investigator did.
Vincent’s recorded voice:
“Because I can get Sophia out quickly and come back for you.”
Anna’s voice:
“What if there isn’t time?”
“There will be.”
“I promise.”
Then Sophia screamed.
The sound changed.
Footsteps.
Metal.
Wind.
Vincent shouting, “Anna! Stay there. I’m coming back!”
Thirty seconds later, an explosion.
Anna covered her mouth.
She had never heard the moment from outside the plane.
Vincent’s voice screamed her name.
Again.
Again.
Then there was a sound Anna had never imagined.
Vincent Moretti crying.
Not quietly.
Not elegantly.
Breaking.
Someone on the recording tried to hold him back.
“Let me go! My wife is in there!”
“Sir, you can’t—”
“ANNA!”
The recording ended.
No one moved.
Vincent turned around.
His eyes were red.
“I know hearing that doesn’t erase what I did.”
Anna couldn’t answer.
“It doesn’t make my choice right.”
He looked directly at her.
“But I need you to know something.”
His voice broke.
“I did come back.”
Anna stared at him.
For three years she had believed he had chosen Sophia and simply watched the plane burn.
Now she knew the truth was more complicated.
He had failed her.
But he had also tried to return.
Vincent walked toward the door.
“I won’t ask you to forgive me.”
Anna whispered, “Vincent.”
He stopped.
She struggled for words.
Finally she asked the question that had haunted her.
“If you could relive that moment…”
He turned.
This time he didn’t hesitate.
May you like
“I would never let go of your hand.”
