Chapter 4 - The Housekeeper's True Identity

The silence in the ballroom was absolute. You could hear the distant hum of the crystal chandeliers and the heavy breathing of Vanessa Hale, who was now trembling with rage and panic.
"Grant," Vanessa hissed, grabbing his arm with manicured claws. "Are you really going to listen to this melodramatic nonsense? She's a maid! She probably Googled your family history just to trap you!"
Grant did not look at Vanessa. He slowly extricated his arm from her grip, stepping away from her as if she carried a plague. His gaze remained locked on Emily.
"You've been working in my house for two years," Grant said, his voice dangerously low, carrying a lethal resonance that made the security guards at the perimeter tense up. "In my estate. Serving my meals. Cleaning up spills engineered by guests who wouldn't last a day in the real world."
"I needed the salary to support my nephews," Emily replied without flinching. "I didn't care about your name or your whiskey. I cared about keeping a roof over my family's heads."
Grant walked slowly toward her, stopping just inches away. Up close, his gray eyes were intense, sharp, and entirely unreadable. Yet beneath the hardened exterior of a Chicago mafia Don, a profound realization was dawning.
"My grandmother told me stories when I was a boy," Grant said softly, his voice meant only for her ears. "About a man who gave away everything to save my parents. My father spent his final years trying to find Daniel Brooks to repay that debt, but the trail had gone cold after the studio was seized by predatory loans."
"My father died believing honor was worth more than money," Emily said quietly. "He was wrong. Honor just left us starving."
Grant’s jaw tightened. He turned abruptly toward the terrified crowd, raising his voice so that every microphone picked up his words.
"Listen to me very carefully," Grant commanded, the absolute authority of the Don vibrating through the room. "Tonight, two hundred of you laughed at a woman whose family is the sole reason any of us are standing in this room. You mocked her. You humiliated her. And worst of all..." He paused, his eyes landing squarely on Vanessa. "...my own fiancée sought to destroy her dignity for sport."
Vanessa stepped back, her face turning pale. "Grant, you're not thinking straight! You're letting a servant manipulate—"
"Quiet," Grant snapped, a single word that carried the weight of a gunshot.

He turned back to Emily, looking down at her stained uniform. Then, to the absolute shock of everyone present, the ruthless mafia boss unbuttoned his custom Italian silk suit jacket, slipped it off, and gently draped it over Emily’s shoulders. The expensive fabric enveloped her, still warm from his body, masking the stain of the Cabernet.
"You asked if I was sure about my promise earlier," Grant said, his voice softening just a fraction. "A Whitmore never breaks his word."
