Chapter 7 - Severing the Ties

The corridor fell dead silent as Grant Mercer stepped out of room 302 and pulled the heavy door shut behind him.

His demeanor had changed instantly. The trembling, remorseful husband who had been on his knees in the cabin was gone; in his place stood the lethal, icy titan who had crushed cartels and corporations alike.

Vanessa stood near the nursing station, dressed in a designer wool trench coat, her diamond earrings catching the sterile fluorescent light. Two of Grant’s security guards were physically blocking her from advancing.

“Grant! Thank God,” Vanessa breathed, pushing past the guard's outstretched arm and rushing toward him. “I heard on the private aviation tracker that your helicopter almost crashed in the ice storm! I chartered an SUV immediately and drove five hours through the snow to be with you. What is going on? Why are you in this filthy rural hospital?”

Grant didn't move an inch. His hands stayed buried in his overcoat pockets, his eyes locking onto hers with such absolute, arctic hatred that Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks, a sudden flicker of genuine fear crossing her sculpted face.

“Who told you to come here, Vanessa?” Grant asked, his voice dangerously soft.

“I... I was worried about you!” she stammered, crossing her arms defensively. “You threatened me on the phone yesterday! I thought you were stressed, but after everything we’ve shared over the last four months—after all the promises you made me—”

“I never promised you a single damn thing,” Grant cut in, every word dropping like lead. “I used you. I used you because I was an arrogant coward who was terrified of becoming a father, and you were pathetic enough to settle for whatever scraps of attention I threw at you between board meetings.”

Vanessa gasped, her cheeks flushing crimson with humiliation. Several nurses and security guards were watching in stunned silence. “How dare you talk to me like that! My father has major investments in your riverfront logistics terminal! If you discard me like trash, he will pull out sixty million dollars in financing by noon tomorrow!”

Grant stepped forward until his towering frame completely shadowed her. “Let him pull it. In fact, call him right now. Tell him to pull every cent.” Grant leaned down, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that made her blood run cold. “And while you have him on the phone, remind him that I hold the forensic audit of his offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands. Remind him that one phone call from my legal counsel to the Department of Justice will put him in federal prison for fifteen years and seize every asset his family owns.”

Vanessa backed away, her hands shaking, her breath catching in her throat. She had known Grant was powerful, but she had never seen the terrifying, predatory monster underneath the tailored Italian suits.

“Get out of this hospital,” Grant said, his eyes drilling into her soul. “If you ever utter my wife's name, if you ever look in the direction of my children, or if you ever cross my path again, I will erase you and your family from this city so completely people will think you never existed. Now walk away.”

Vanessa turned on her designer heels and fled down the corridor toward the elevators, sobbing in absolute terror.

Grant turned to Daniel, who was standing nearby. “Make sure she leaves the county immediately. And Daniel?”

“Yes, Boss?”

“Call my chief financial officer. Have him draft a complete surrender of my executive voting shares in Mercer Holdings. Place seventy percent of the conglomerate’s assets into an irrevocable blind trust solely under Claire Bennett’s name and our children’s names. I want it done before sunset.”

Daniel’s eyes widened in utter shock. “Sir... that means you won't legally control your own empire anymore. She could bankrupt you with a single signature.”

“Good,” Grant said quietly, looking back at the closed hospital door. “Then she’ll finally have the power to destroy me if I ever hurt her again.”
