Chapter 1 - The Perimeter Falls

The air inside Luca Ferrante’s office smelled like expensive cedarwood and cold rain. Outside, Chicago was drowning beneath October clouds, but inside this soundproof penthouse, the only noise was the sharp snap of Luca clicking his lighter shut.

“They didn’t walk away,” he repeated. His voice didn't rise, but the low frequency of it vibrated through the floorboards.

“What does that mean?” I demanded, rushing toward his desk. The folded paper in my hand felt like burning coal against my palms. “Luca, talk to me. Is Gabi safe right now?”

He ignored my question, tapping his earpiece twice. “Marco, status on the secondary extraction team. If they breach the perimeter gate, put two rounds into the asphalt and clear the corridor.” A split-second pause. “Do not let them lay a single finger on the girl. If you fail, do not bother coming back alive.”

Hearing him issue commands so casually made my blood turn to ice water. For eight months, I had been his personal records manager, sanitizing shipping manifests, deleting surveillance logs, and redacting names from digital spreadsheets. I knew the Ferrante family was dangerous, but I had convinced myself that sitting behind a dual-monitor setup kept me separated from the violence.

Now, the violence was circling my seventeen-year-old sister outside Caldwell Prep.

Luca cut the transmission and finally looked at me. His hazel eyes were devoid of panic, laser-focused with an intensity that pinned me to the spot. “Nora, breathe. Your heart rate is loud enough to hear from across the room.”

“Don’t tell me to breathe!” I shouted, all my professional composure splintering into raw panic. “You dragged her into this! You put guards on her without my permission, and now the Coretti syndicate is hunting her down just to get leverage on you!”

Luca didn't flinch. He walked around the mahogany desk with measured, predatory steps until he stopped a mere foot away from me. He was wearing his tailored charcoal coat, and the heat radiating off him was overwhelming.

“They are not using her to get leverage on me,” he whispered, his gaze dropping to the crushed paper in my hand.

“Then why are they doing this?”

“Because they know you are the only person in this entire empire who holds my balance.” He reached down and took the letter from my fingers. I was too stunned to pull away. He unfolded the crisp paper, barely glancing at the words I’d labored over for three nights.

“You’re resigning,” he stated plainly.

“I was trying to,” I choked out. “Before my life blew up into a thousand pieces.”

Luca tilted his head, watching me with an expression that bordered on ruthless amusement. He gripped both sides of the paper and ripped it down the center. Then across. With a flick of his wrist, the shredded remnants of my escape plan fluttered down like confetti onto the dark hardwood.

“What are you doing?” My breath hitched.

“You don’t work for me, Nora,” Luca said softly, his voice dropping into a dark, possessive cadence that made my chest tighten violently. “You belong to me. And nobody resigns from my life.”
