Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The cold muzzle of Helena’s pistol was aimed directly at the center of Kiara’s forehead.

Water dripped from Kiara’s hair, pooling at her feet on the raised anti-static flooring of the server room. Behind her, the countdown timer ticked mercilessly down to two minutes and twenty seconds.

Victor struggled to rise from the chair, but his legs gave out under the severe loss of blood. He collapsed against the steel desk, coughing up dark fluid, his eyes burning with helpless rage. “Don’t touch her, Helena... this is between you and me!”

“Be quiet, Victor,” Helena said without looking at him, her attention fixed entirely on Kiara. “You were always weak like your father. Anthony spent months weeping over the death of his old friends. He didn't have the stomach to build an empire that lasted. But I do.” She tilted her head, her gaze piercing through Kiara’s wire-frame glasses. “Enter the bypass code, girl. Transfer the Vanguard holding shares to my private accounts in Geneva, and I will let you walk out of this building with your mother.”

Kiara looked at the chrome barrel of the gun. She didn't blink. She didn't cower.

“You’re lying,” Kiara said, her voice dropping into a register of icy, absolute certainty. “You can’t let me leave. My father told me how your mind works. He said you were the one who convinced Anthony to execute the Moretti leadership back in ninety-eight. You told Anthony it was business, but it wasn't business, was it?”

Helena’s eyes narrowed into slits. “You know nothing about that night.”

“I know everything,” Kiara replied, her fingers subtly finding the home row on the mechanical keyboard behind her back. “My father kept personal audio recordings in this cryptex. Lorenzo Moretti wasn't trying to take over your territory. Lorenzo was your lover.”

Victor’s head snapped up from the desk, his face contorting in sheer, unadulterated shock. “What did you just say?”

“Look at the transfer logs from 1997,” Kiara continued, speaking with deliberate, measured speed, every word a tactical strike aimed directly at the woman’s composure. “Your mother funneled three million dollars into Lorenzo’s offshore accounts three weeks before his yacht blew up. She didn't want him dead. She was planning to run away with him. But Anthony found out. Anthony planted the bomb on the yacht to punish them both.”

Helena’s polished, aristocratic mask shattered completely. The calm, calculating matriarch vanished, replaced by a snarling, venomous specter of unhealed rage.

“Anthony was a pig!” Helena screamed, her voice cracking with decades of buried poison. “He was an illiterate thug who thought he could buy class by buying me! Lorenzo understood culture! Lorenzo built the real shipping networks! Anthony stole everything from him, and then he forced me to sit across from him at dinner every night for twenty years while he played the honorable don!”

“And you spent the last seven years punishing Victor because he looks like the man you hated,” Kiara said softly.

“Shut up!” Helena shrieked, cocking the hammer of the chrome pistol. “Shut your mouth and enter the bypass code!”

00:01:05.

“I already entered it,” Kiara whispered.

Helena froze, her eyes darting to the terminal screen behind Kiara.

The red countdown timer had vanished. In its place, a massive green progress bar read:

BROADCAST COMPLETE. 4.2 GIGABYTES TRANSMITTED TO DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, CHICAGO FIELD OFFICE, INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE, AND INTERPOL.

Beneath that, a flashing amber warning illuminated the entire room:

FACILITY INDUSTRIAL SEAL PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.

Outside the server room, heavy five-ton steel blast doors began descending along every exit, crashing down into the concrete foundation with thunderous, hydraulic finality. The entire terminal was transforming into an inescapable, steel tomb.

“You foolish little brat!” Helena roared, lunging forward with her finger squeezing the trigger.

A gunshot deafened the room.

Helena stumbled backward, her hand flying to her chest. She looked down in disbelief as dark crimson bloomed across her pearl necklace and white silk blouse.

Behind her stood Victor. He had dragged himself across the raised floor on his knees, holding Dante’s discarded service revolver in both trembling hands. Smoke curled from the barrel.

Helena looked at her son, her mouth opening, but only a wet, gurgling gasp escaped. She dropped the chrome pistol, stumbled against the glass railing of the observation deck, and fell backward into the deluge below.

The revolver slipped from Victor’s fingers, clattering onto the linoleum. He collapsed forward onto his hands and knees, his vision dimming into gray static.

Kiara was at his side instantly, wrapping her arms around his chest, pulling his heavy head into her lap. “Victor! Stay with me! Look at me!”

“The... blast doors...” Victor whispered, his skin icy to the touch. “We’re trapped inside. The system sealed the exits.”

Kiara looked down at him, her hands pressing firmly against the bleeding wound in his chest. For the first time all night, tears spilled over her eyelashes, cutting clean tracks through the soot on her cheeks.

“My dad didn't build a prison, Victor,” she said, her voice shaking with fierce, unyielding hope. “He built an emergency escape hatch. And he left the coordinates right here.”"
