Chapter 6 - The Charity Gala Trap

The annual Children’s Memorial Charity Gala at the downtown Plaza Hotel was the crown jewel of the city’s high-society calendar—and a perilous battlefield for Valente Hayes. Attending the gala was a non-negotiable requirement of the family court proceedings; the presiding judge, along with Agent Vance and half the city’s legal elite, would be in attendance.
Clare stood before the full-length mirror in the master dressing suite, smoothing down the emerald green velvet evening gown Valente had commissioned for her. The off-the-shoulder neckline highlighted the pale curve of her neck, while the diamond necklace—a Hayes family heirloom worth half a million dollars—felt heavy against her collarbone. She looked completely unrecognizable from the exhausted triage nurse who used to eat cold pizza in the hospital breakroom.
The door behind her opened, and Valente stepped into the room. He wore a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo that emphasized his broad shoulders and commanding presence. For a long moment, he simply stared at her, his dark gray eyes stripping away her defenses.
""You look breathtaking, Clare,"" he murmured, his voice husky as he walked up behind her, meeting her gaze in the mirror. He reached out, his warm hands resting gently on her bare shoulders. ""Are you ready for this?""
Clare turned around to face him, looking into his eyes. ""You have my brother in New Hampshire, don't you?""
Valente’s hands tightened slightly on her shoulders, but he didn't pull away. His expression didn't flicker with guilt; instead, an exhausted sigh escaped his lips. ""I was going to tell you tonight, after the gala.""
""Why did you keep it from me?"" she whispered, her voice laced with pain. ""Was he just a bargaining chip to keep me here?""
""No,"" Valente said firmly, stepping closer until there was no space between them. ""I kept it from you because the Romanos had tapped the estate's external communication relays. If you reacted, if you tried to call him, their surveillance would have pinpointed his location within hours. I put four of my best men on that safehouse to keep him breathing. For you, Clare. Everything I'm doing right now is to keep you and Colin alive.""
Clare looked at him, seeing the sheer sincerity burning behind his hardened facade. The anger inside her evaporated, replaced by a sudden, dizzying rush of longing. Before she could think, Valente reached up, his fingers sliding into the auburn silk of her hair, and pulled her toward him.
His kiss was fierce, possessive, and filled with a desperate hunger that shattered whatever emotional boundaries remained between them. Clare gasped against his lips, her hands rising to grip the lapels of his tuxedo, kissing him back with an equal, unyielding passion. The world outside—the lies, the guns, the forged names—faded into nothingness.
When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers, both of them were breathing heavily. ""Tonight, we finish this,"" Valente promised against her lips. ""Stay close to me at the gala. Do not leave my side.""
An hour later, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering chandeliers, crystal flutes, and classical string quartets. Valente escorted Clare through the crowd with absolute poise, his hand permanently settled against the small of her back. She played her role to perfection, charming judges, hospital board directors, and city council members with her medical knowledge and natural grace.
Near the champagne fountain, however, the atmosphere shifted.
A tall, silver-haired man in an immaculate white tuxedo stepped directly into their path, flanked by two burly associates with bulges beneath their jackets. It was Dominic Romano—the ruthless patriarch of the rival family.
""Valente,"" Dominic said, his voice smooth like venom on velvet. ""I see congratulations are in order. And this must be the lovely Clare.""
Dominic took Clare’s hand, bowing slightly to kiss the back of her knuckles. His eyes, cold and reptilian, locked onto her face.
""You look remarkably familiar, my dear,"" Dominic murmured, holding her hand a second too long. ""You remind me of a young woman who used to work the late triage shift at St. Jude’s hospital. A nurse named Norah Fisher, whose car was found floating in the river. Tragic story. Her brother owed quite a large sum of money to some friends of mine.""
Clare’s blood turned to ice, but she forced a polite, cool smile, tilting her head with practiced elegance. ""I'm afraid I spent my nursing career on the West Coast, Mr. Romano. But in emergency medicine, we all tend to share the same exhausted expression.""

Valente stepped smoothly between them, cutting Dominic’s line of sight, his voice dropping into a lethal purr. ""Dominic. This is a children's charity event. Enjoy your champagne, or I will have my security team escort you into the harbor.""
Dominic gave a dry, sinister laugh. ""Of course, Valente. Just admiring your... good fortune."" He leaned in closer, whispering so only the two of them could hear. ""The safehouse in New Hampshire is quiet this time of night. Let's see how long your luck holds.""
