Chapter 7 - Smoke and Mirrors

The peaceful respite did not last long.
By eight o'clock that evening, the Moretti estate was bathed in the warm glow of crystal chandeliers, but tension had once again gripped the security compound. Elena stood in the vast library, dressed in an emerald silk slip dress Mrs. Bennett had arranged for her, when the heavy oak doors banged open with violent force.
Matteo Moretti stormed into the room, his face purple with rage, waving a printed copy of the Chicago Sun-Times evening edition.
“Have you lost your mind, Alessandro?” Matteo roared, ignoring Elena entirely as he slammed the paper down on the desk. “Look at the front page! Look at what that gutter-rat Mercer managed to push through before they locked him in a cell!”
Alessandro, who had been pouring two crystal glasses of vintage Barolo, didn't even spill a drop. He picked up the newspaper and scanned the headline:
MAFIA HEIR ACCUSED OF COERCION: DID ALESSANDRO MORETTI ORCHESTRATE MERCER LOGISTICS COLLAPSE TO HARBOR BEAUTIFUL RUNAWAY?
The article, penned by an unscrupulous freelance journalist who had received a fabricated dossier from Ryan Mercer hours before his arrest, painted Elena as a cunning temptress who had swindled forty thousand dollars from her fiancé and traded intimate corporate secrets to Moretti in exchange for asylum. The story insinuated that Alessandro had used illegal mob muscle to force First Midwest Bank into liquidating Mercer’s business.
“The city council has called an emergency review for tomorrow at ten AM,” Matteo shouted, pacing the Persian rug. “Alderman Rossi—who has been taking kickbacks from our rivals in Detroit for three years—is using this article to demand a complete revocation of our riverfront zoning permits! If those permits are pulled, we lose thirty-five million dollars in earnest deposits on the shipyard revitalization project! All for a girl with a bruised face!”
Elena felt a suffocating wave of guilt wash over her. She stepped forward, her hands clenched in the emerald silk. “Mr. Moretti... Matteo is right. This lie is targeted at your empire. Ryan knew he couldn't beat you in court, so he decided to burn your reputation to the ground. Let me go to the press. Let me hold a press conference and show them the police reports, the medical records, the photos of my bruises—”
“No,” Alessandro said, his voice cutting through the panic like a diamond saw.
He set his wine glass down and looked at his uncle. “Matteo, you have spent forty years believing that the only way to survive in this city is to hide in the shadows and bribe petty politicians. You think our power comes from dirty council votes and quiet backroom handshakes.”
“It’s how your father built this dynasty!” Matteo spat back.
“My father died with twenty federal wiretaps on his phone and a heart attack brought on by fear of betrayal,” Alessandro countered ruthlessly. “The world has changed. Today, power does not belong to the men who hide in dark cellars. Power belongs to the men who control the truth.”
Alessandro turned to Marco, who had entered the library with a thin, encrypted satellite phone. “Is the connection ready?”
“On line one, boss,” Marco answered. “Publisher of the Sun-Times and the bureau chief of WGN News are both on the conference bridge.”
Alessandro took the receiver. When he spoke, his voice was the epitome of calm, executive authority. “Gentlemen. This is Alessandro Moretti. I am currently holding the sworn affidavits from Special Agent Miller of the Illinois State Police, the forensic ballistic report on the signature forgery, and twelve months of text messages detailing aggravated stalking and death threats issued by Ryan Mercer against Miss Elena Carter.”
He paused, letting the weight of the evidence settle across the wire.
“Tomorrow morning at eight AM, Miss Carter will file a fifty-million-dollar civil defamation lawsuit against your independent stringer and every publication that printed his unverified allegations without consulting primary court records. However, if you run the unredacted police logs, the full documentation of Mercer’s multi-million-dollar bank fraud, and the domestic violence charges currently pending before the grand jury as your front-page morning exclusive... I will grant WGN the sole broadcast rights to the riverfront ground-breaking ceremony next month.”
Elena watched in absolute awe as Alessandro navigated the media titans. Within three minutes, the executives on the phone were practically begging for the digital files, promising a total retraction and an explosive front-page exposé detailing the heroic rescue of an abused employee by an ethical corporate leader.
Alessandro hung up the phone and looked back at Matteo, whose mouth was hanging slightly open in stunned disbelief.
“The council vote will proceed tomorrow,” Alessandro stated coldly. “And Alderman Rossi will vote in our favor, because if he speaks a single word against us, Julian Vance will release the bank statements showing his sister’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. Do you have any further advice for me, Uncle?”
Matteo swallowed hard, his face pale. He looked at Elena, then at his nephew, finally recognizing that the ruthless young lion who had taken over the family was lightyears ahead of the old ways.
“No,” Matteo muttered, adjusting his lapels. “I... I will see you at the council chambers tomorrow.”
He turned and walked out of the room, closing the double doors behind him.
Elena stood in the quiet library, the adrenaline slowly leaving her trembling limbs. She looked at Alessandro, who was walking toward her with a gentle, disarming smile.
“You make it look so easy,” she whispered, shaking her head. “You make the world bend to your will.”
May you like
Alessandro reached out, taking her hands in his. His skin was warm, his touch electric, sending a shiver of longing through her entire body.
“The world only bends when you have something worth fighting for, Elena,” he said softly, bringing her knuckles to his lips and pressing a tender, lingering kiss against her skin. “And for the first time in six years... I have found something I will burn this city to the ground to keep.”
