Chapter 5 - The Financial Paper Trail

Nathan’s face drained of every drop of color. The arrogant sneer vanished from his mouth, leaving behind a slack-jawed, hollow expression of pure terror.

“You... how do you know about Apex?” he whispered, his vocal cords constricting.

“Because while you were spending your evenings at luxury cigar lounges bragging to your investor friends about how easily you manipulated small business owners, I was sitting in your home office, mirroring your hard drives,” I said clearly.

The murmur in the crowd rose to a roar. Guests who were top investors in Nathan’s boutique investment firm suddenly stood up in their pews, their eyes wide with sudden financial panic.

“What did she just say?” an older gentleman in the third row shouted, stepping out into the aisle. “Richard! Did Nathan touch the Apex portfolio? Our retirement funds are parked in Apex!”

Senator Whitmore’s hands began to shake violently. He reached into his pocket for his phone, but two plainclothes investigators moved in from the side transept, blocking his path. “Senator, keep your hands where we can see them. We have a subpoena for all personal and political devices associated with the Whitmore Capital accounts.”

I looked out at the sea of terrified socialites and corrupt investors, then looked back at Nathan.

“You thought I was just Thomas Sterling’s dutiful daughter who did simple bookkeeping for her father's building firm,” I continued, every word landing like a hammer blow. “You never bothered to verify where I worked before my father suffered his heart attack. For five years, I worked as a senior forensic auditor for Deloitte’s Financial Crime and Asset Tracing division. I spent half a decade tracking money laundered by cartels, Russian oligarchs, and predatory hedge funds.”

Nathan shook his head in frantic, wild denial. “No... no, the system is encrypted! You couldn't have bypassed the dual-key authentication! You don't have the clearance!”

“You wrote your master passphrase inside the leather cover of your grandfather's pocket watch on your nightstand, Nathan,” I replied coldly. “Arrogant men always leave obvious footprints because they truly believe nobody is smart enough to look. For four months, every time you threatened my father with loan foreclosures, I located another fraudulent ledger entry. I found where you altered the subcontractor invoices. I found where you forged my father’s signature on personal guarantees. And I found the five million dollars you stole from the Whitmore Family Charity Foundation to cover your margin calls last month.”

“Evelyn, shut up!” Nathan lunged at me with his hands outstretched, his face contorted in psychotic rage.

Before he could even close the distance, two NYPD officers grabbed him by the arms, spun him around against the marble altar railing, and slammed him chest-first against the carved stone.

Click. Clack.

The sharp, metallic snap of stainless-steel handcuffs echoed through the holy silence of the sanctuary.

Photographers surged forward, ignoring the screaming cathedral ushers. Flashes illuminated Nathan’s contorted face pinned against the stone altar, right beneath the golden crucifix. The heir to the Whitmore dynasty was in irons.

Detective Bennett pulled a stack of laminated documents from her folder and held them up before the cameras.

“This is the official medical forensic scan completed at Mount Sinai Hospital at two o'clock this morning,” Bennett announced clearly, projecting her voice to the press corps. “It confirms a depressed fracture of the left orbital floor, severe soft-tissue hematoma, and deep contusions consistent with blunt-force trauma from a heavy ring. Furthermore, we have twelve hours of synchronized audio surveillance captured from the defendant's residence, in which Nathaniel Whitmore Jr. can be heard explicitly threatening to murder Ms. Sterling’s family if she failed to comply with his demands.”

Victoria Whitmore collapsed in a dead faint across the front pew, her pearls scattering across the polished marble floor like hail.
