Chapter 8 - The Public Reckoning

Derek caught up to Brianna, grabbing her arm near the elbow to hold her back. ""Brianna, stop! What is wrong with you? This is a public memorial! These people are honoring service members!""

""I don't care!"" she shrieked, wrenching her arm free with manic intensity. She was completely unhinged now, stripped of her charm, stripped of the country club veneer, reduced to the raw, petulant rage of a spoiled child who had finally been told 'no' by the entire world.

She marched straight toward our circle, pointing an accusatory acrylic nail directly at my chest.

""You ruined my wedding!"" Brianna screamed, completely blind to the uniforms surrounding her. ""You sat there and let his crazy old uncle humiliate me! Derek called off the ceremony because of you! Eighty thousand dollars! My dress, my flowers, my entire life—ruined because you couldn't stand seeing me be the center of attention for one single weekend!""

Several naval officers stepped forward instinctively, forming a protective barrier in front of me and Leo's young daughter. Captain Jenkins, who had been speaking with the memorial director, turned around with an expression of icy, terrifying command.

""Ma'am,"" Captain Jenkins said, her voice cutting through Brianna's screeching like a bullhorn. ""You are causing a disturbance at an official naval memorial. Lower your voice immediately or I will have park police escort you off the premises in handcuffs.""

Brianna froze, suddenly realizing that she was not in a private dining room surrounded by polite country club guests who felt obligated to ignore her tantrums. She was standing in the center of Washington D.C., surrounded by senior military officers who looked at her with pure, unadulterated contempt.

""I... she's my sister,"" Brianna stammered, her voice dropping into that familiar, pathetic whimper. ""She's trying to ruin my life.""

Leo Whitmore stepped forward, leaning on his cane, placing his body directly between Brianna and me.

""No, lady,"" Leo said, his voice trembling with an anger that was completely different from her shrill screaming. ""She didn't ruin your life. She saved mine.""

Brianna blinked at him, confused.

""I'm the guy in that photograph,"" Leo said, pointing his cane at her feet. ""I was twenty-four years old when my boat took on water. The current pulled three of our deckhands under. I had a crushed femur and two broken ribs. When Commander Vance jumped into that water, she knew there was a fifty-fifty chance her safety line would snap against the reef. She didn't ask who I was. She didn't ask if I was wealthy, or charming, or important. She risked leaving her own family without a daughter just to make sure I made it home to mine.""

Leo stepped closer, his jaw tight.

""You stood in front of fifty people and mocked her courage because you couldn't handle thirty seconds of attention being drawn away from your white dress. You aren't a victim, Brianna. You're just an extraordinarily selfish person who finally got caught.""

Derek stepped up beside his uncle. He pulled his engagement ring—Brianna's ring, which she had thrown at him in the lobby earlier—from his pocket and tossed it casually into her open designer bag.

""Go home, Brianna,"" Derek said quietly. ""It's over.""
