Chapter 3 - The Ghost of March

The grandfather clock in the hall ticked, loud and relentless.

Adrian stood frozen, the shadow of that rainy March night returning to his eyes. They had returned from an annual charity banquet where rival syndicate bosses had openly mocked him for keeping a pet wife in a gilded cage. Adrian had been drinking bourbon. Mara had been furious, exhausted by the polite whispers of women whose husbands traded in contraband.

They had argued in his study—a bitter, venomous clash of pride and loneliness that had suddenly collapsed into desperate, feverish intimacy against the mahogany desk. It had been the only night of raw, unfiltered passion in their two years of rigid arrangement. The next morning, Adrian had left for London before sunrise, leaving behind a cold note and an apology for crossing professional boundaries.

They hadn't touched each other since.

"It's mine," Adrian said, the word sounding foreign on his tongue.

"Yes," Mara whispered, hugging her arms tightly around herself. "It's yours."

Adrian looked at her as if she were a ghost. He reached out, his hand hesitating in midair before dropping back to his side. "Why did you hide it? Why the coats? Why the thirty-six hundred dollars?"

"Because of who you are!" Mara's voice rose, trembling with raw emotion. "Look at what happened today! A sixteen-year-old boy had a gun pressed to his head because someone wanted to blow your plane out of the sky. Two months ago, a car bomb went off outside your warehouse in Newark. Last year, your cousin was poisoned in his own penthouse!"

She took a ragged breath, tears spilling down her flushed cheeks.

"I grew up poor, Adrian. My father died owing money to loan sharks, and my mother worked herself into an early grave trying to pay off debts that weren't hers. I know what happens to the families of men like you. They become leverage. They become targets."

Adrian’s jaw set hard. "No one touches my family. I built this empire so no one could touch what is mine."

"Your empire is a graveyard waiting to happen!" she cried. "I couldn't let my baby grow up surrounded by men with pistols under their jackets. I couldn't let my child live inside a bunker!"

Adrian’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "So your plan was to run? To take my heir to some rat-infested motel in the middle of nowhere and raise them on table scraps?"

May you like

"To raise them safe!" she screamed. "Where nobody puts a tracker on their father's plane!"

Adrian stepped closer, towering over her. "You are never leaving this house, Mara. Not with my child."
