Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

The Lake Shore penthouse was nothing like anything Emma had ever seen outside the glossy pages of architectural magazines. The private elevator opened directly into an expansive, two-story living area wrapped entirely in floor-to-ceiling glass, offering a panoramic, dizzying view of Lake Michigan churning beneath the winter gale.
The floors were polished dark hardwood; modern abstract paintings hung beneath museum-grade spotlights, and a colossal limestone fireplace roared with crackling birch logs, throwing dancing shadows across white leather furniture.
Emma sat shivering on the edge of an immense sectional sofa, wrapped in a cashmere blanket that probably cost more than three months of her waitressing wages. In her lap, she clutched the rusted metal lockbox Roman had retrieved from her apartment. Her knuckles were bruised, and a streak of black soot marked her cheek.
Roman walked in from the adjoining library, having shed his suit jacket and tie. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing corded muscle and a long, jagged scar that ran from his wrist to his inner elbow. He set two heavy crystal tumblers on the marble coffee table, along with a bottle of single-malt scotch.
""Drink,"" Roman said simply.
Emma looked up at him, her defenses flaring despite her exhaustion. ""I don't drink scotch. And I don't belong here.""
""You survived an assassination squad sent by Mateo Castiglione,"" Roman replied, pouring amber liquid into both glasses. ""You can handle two ounces of whiskey. Drink it, Emma. Your shock is turning into hypothermia.""
Emma picked up the heavy crystal, her hands trembling so violently that the ice cubes clinked against the rim. She swallowed a mouthful. The burning alcohol hit her throat like liquid fire, blooming in her chest and forcing warmth back into her frozen limbs. She coughed, wiping her mouth with the back of her sleeve.
""Why are they trying to kill me?"" Emma demanded, her voice cracking with suppressed rage and terror. ""I'm a server at Harbor & Ash! I make two dollars and thirteen cents an hour plus tips! I don't know who Mateo Castiglione is, and I don't know who you are!""
Roman sat down in the armchair across from her, his posture relaxed, almost casual, yet vibrating with latent authority.
""They weren't trying to kill you, Callahan,"" Roman said evenly. ""They were trying to take you hostage.""
""Hostage? For what? Nobody is going to pay a dime to ransom me! I don't have family! I told you that tonight!""
""They weren't planning on ransoming you to family,"" Roman said, holding her gaze with terrifying stillness. ""They were planning on using you to break me.""
Emma went dead silent. The crackle of the fireplace was the only sound in the cavernous penthouse. She stared at the man sitting opposite her, trying to comprehend the sheer madness of his words.
""To break you?"" Emma whispered. ""Roman, I don't know you. We spoke for the first time tonight. You’ve been sitting at table twelve for eight months eating steak and ignoring everyone. How could my life possibly matter to your enemies?""
Roman leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. The firelight caught the dark amber of his eyes, stripping away every shred of detachment.
""Because for eight months, you were the only thing in this godforsaken city that didn't lie to me,"" Roman said, his voice dropping to a low, intense rumble. ""Every politician in Cook County smiles at me while stealing from my payrolls. Every captain in my organization bows his head while calculating how to stick a knife between my ribs. But every Thursday night at 7:30, you brought me burnt coffee, told me the chef was having a bad day, and looked at me like I was just another tired man who needed dinner.""
May you like
Emma’s breath hitched. ""You watched me.""
""I protected you,"" Roman corrected coldly. ""Until Mateo Castiglione figured out that Harbor & Ash wasn't just my territory—it was my sanctuary. And now, Emma, whether you like it or not, the entire underworld of Chicago believes you belong to me.""
