Chapter 8 - The Press Conference of the Century

Forty-eight hours after the scandal broke, the grand ballroom of the Hawthorne Grand was once again packed to maximum capacity.

Only this time, there were no champagne towers, no glittering silk dresses, and no waltzing under chandeliers. Instead, over two hundred journalists, television camera crews, and federal investigators crowded the floor, their lenses pointed toward a sleek wooden podium set up beneath the blinding stage lights.

In the front row sat Victoria Hale and her father, Arthur Hale—a silver-haired patriarch with cold, predatory eyes. They wore matching expressions of smug victory, confident that Julian Cole had called this emergency press conference to announce his resignation and plead for a settlement.

Victoria leaned back, whispering to her father with a triumphant smirk. “He’s going to offer thirty million to bury the story. We take fifty.”

The side door opened.

Julian Cole stepped onto the stage. He wore an immaculate navy suit, his expression carved from dark marble. But he wasn't alone.

Walking beside him, her head held impossibly high, was Karen Brooks.

She wore a sharp, tailored ivory pantsuit that commanded the entire room. There was no trace of the timid event worker in the clearance-rack dress. Her eyes burned with absolute confidence, her spine straight, carrying a thick leather dossier under her arm.

A chaotic explosion of camera flashes erupted, turning the room into a strobe-lit storm. Reporters shouted questions over one another in a deafening roar:

“Mr. Cole, are you stepping down?!”

“Miss Brooks, did you take kickbacks from the foundation?!”

“Mr. Cole, are the federal charges imminent?!”

Julian stood behind the microphone, raising a single hand. The room fell instantly, completely silent.

“Two days ago,” Julian began, his deep baritone reverberating through the high-ceilinged room, “allegations were made accusing Karen Brooks of orchestrating a twenty-million-dollar charity fraud at this very hotel.”

Victoria smirked from the front row, crossing her legs.

“Those allegations,” Julian continued coldly, “were correct about one thing: an unprecedented fraud took place in this building. However, the perpetrator was not a hardworking employee whose only crime was protecting her colleagues.”

Julian stepped back, extending his hand toward Karen. “I yield the floor to Miss Karen Brooks, the newly appointed Chief Auditor and Managing Director of Cole Meridian Philanthropic Holdings.”

Gasps rippled through the press corps. Arthur Hale’s smug expression began to slip.

Karen stepped up to the microphone, adjusting it with a practiced, steady hand. She opened the dossier, looking directly into the television cameras broadcasting her face to millions of homes across America.

“For ten years, I managed the operational logistics of the Hawthorne Grand,” Karen said, her voice clear, powerful, and unwavering. “I know every square foot of this building, every supplier, and every invoice. Over the past forty-eight hours, our forensic team, with full cooperation from the Department of Justice, cross-referenced five years of gala billings.”

She turned, locking her gaze directly onto Victoria Hale.

“Between 2021 and 2025,” Karen declared, “the Hale Family Foundation billed approximately forty-two million dollars to three shell companies registered under the name ‘Helios Holdings’ in the Cayman Islands. These invoices covered non-existent floral arrangements, fake audio engineering, and phantom security teams.”

Karen tapped the screen behind her. A massive digital projection flared to life, displaying signed corporate resolutions, tax filings, and bank routing numbers showing direct transfers from the charity’s accounts into private Swiss bank accounts.

And at the bottom of every single fraudulent invoice was the neat, loopy signature of Victoria Hale.

“The person who siphoned forty-two million dollars from cancer patients and children’s hospitals,” Karen said, her voice ringing out like a judge delivering a death sentence, “is sitting in the front row.”
