Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Crossing

The exit from Mount Sinai was executed with military precision. Dr. Chen handed Laura her ultrasound prints in a manila folder, unaware that outside the corridor, six plainclothes security operatives had already cleared the service elevator and secured the basement loading dock.
""The main entrance is watched,"" Marco said quietly as he met them near the industrial doors. ""DeLuca has four vehicles rotating around the Fifth Avenue perimeter. Salvatore is getting impatient. He knows we intercepted his scout team.""
Gabriel’s demeanor had shifted entirely. The tears were gone, replaced by a hyper-focused, lethal calm. He placed himself between Laura and every open doorway, his hand resting near his coat lapel, his eyes scanning every shadow in the underground garage. ""We aren't running back to Brooklyn. It’s too exposed, too many blind corners on 4th Avenue. We take her to the safehouse in Riverdale. It’s fortified, off the syndicate registry, and fully staffed with medical equipment.""
Laura stopped walking. ""I’m not hiding in your fortress, Gabriel.""
Gabriel turned to her, his voice dropping into an urgent, desperate whisper. ""Laura, this isn't about pride anymore. DeLuca doesn't play by syndicate rules. He targets families. When my father pushed him out of Brooklyn twenty years ago, DeLuca firebombed his brother's home with children inside. If he takes you, I cannot guarantee your safety. Please. Come to Riverdale. If you want me to leave the house the moment you’re inside, I will sleep in the car down the road. Just get behind the reinforced gates.""
Laura looked at Marco, whose expression was grim and pale, then back at Gabriel. She could see the genuine terror in his eyes—not for himself, but for the life she carried. She nodded slowly. ""Riverdale. But you stay outside.""
""Done,"" Gabriel agreed instantly.
They boarded a heavy, armored Suburban. Marco took the wheel, Gabriel sat in the front passenger seat with a tactical tablet monitoring street cameras, and Laura sat in the reinforced rear cabin, her fingers tracing the ultrasound printout in her lap.
The convoy moved north along the Henry Hudson Parkway. The afternoon sky was bruised with heavy gray clouds, threatening another torrential downpour. Traffic was thick near the George Washington Bridge interchange, cars crawling bumper-to-bumper along the concrete barriers.
""Marco, exit at 178th,"" Gabriel ordered suddenly, his eyes darting to the rearview mirror. ""The gray commercial van behind us has been matching our speed for three miles, and the black Dodge Ram in the right lane is boxing us in.""
""On it,"" Marco grunted, wrenching the wheel toward the off-ramp.
Before the Suburban could clear the concrete barrier, the Dodge Ram accelerated violently, slamming into their rear quarter panel. Metal screeched against metal, sparks showering across the asphalt as the armored Suburban absorbed the kinetic shock, its anti-roll stabilization keeping them upright.
""Hold on!"" Marco shouted.
From the front, a flatbed delivery truck backed out across the ramp, completely barricading the exit. Three men in tactical gear and ski masks jumped down from the truck bed, raising automatic carbines.
""Get down!"" Gabriel roared, throwing his entire upper body over the center console, using his broad torso and ballistic vest as a human shield over Laura’s seated form. ""Keep your head down, Laura! Don't move!""
Gunfire erupted. High-caliber rounds slammed into the bullet-resistant glass of the Suburban, spider-webbing the windshield with white cracks but failing to penetrate the reinforced polycarbonate. Laura squeezed her eyes shut, pressing her hands tight against her stomach, whispering prayers against the deafening crackle of rifles.
Gabriel reached down, drew his weapon, and kicked his door open using the heavy steel panel as a rolling bunker. ""Marco, suppressive fire! Clear the driver of the flatbed!""
Gabriel didn't hesitate. He stepped into the kill zone, his movements terrifyingly precise. Two shots echoed from his Kimber .45, dropping the lead shooter instantly. A second gunman tried to flank the Suburban, but Gabriel pivoted, firing twice into his center mass before advancing toward the flatbed with an unstoppable, cold fury.
He wasn't fighting like a boss preserving his territory. He was fighting like a father protecting the nest. In less than forty-five seconds, the ambush was dismantled. Two shooters lay motionless on the pavement, and the driver of the Dodge Ram reversed frantically, fleeing back onto the highway.
Gabriel didn't pursue. He sprinted back to the Suburban, his face streaked with soot, his suit jacket torn. He tore the rear door open and dropped to his knees, his hands trembling as he checked Laura from head to toe.
""Are you hit? Did anything hit you? Laura, look at me!""
Laura opened her eyes. She was shaking, her breath coming in ragged gasps, but she was untouched. She looked at Gabriel, whose hands were hovering over her shoulders, frantic, terrified, completely exposed to any remaining danger.

""We’re okay,"" she whispered, her voice trembling. ""We’re okay, Gabriel.""
Gabriel leaned his forehead against her knee, his entire frame shuddering with relief as sirens wailed in the distance. ""I’m taking you somewhere no one can ever touch you again.""
