Chapter 6 - The Mechanic's Ghost

The Charlestown marine terminal looked like an industrial graveyard under the relentless curtain of the blizzard. Row upon row of multi-colored shipping containers created towering steel canyons, through which the arctic Atlantic wind screamed like a chorus of dying men.

At the end of Pier Nine, the Valentina sat moored against the rotting wooden pilings. Once a luxury yacht belonging to Vincent Bellucci, it had been stripped of its teak decking and brass railings, left to decay into a rusted hulk by Elias’s front companies.

Roman and Serena approached on foot from the rail yard, their boots crunching softly on the packed snow. The smell of diesel fuel and old brine hung thick in the freezing air.

""Over there,"" Serena whispered, pointing toward an open maintenance shed twenty yards from the ship’s gangway.

Inside the shed, a single yellow work light illuminated two figures.

Silas Kane stood bound to an iron support column, his face battered and bleeding, his breath coming in ragged white plumes. Standing over him, holding a heavy tire iron, was Elias Bellucci. Flanking the shed were six heavily armed guards, their assault weapons slung low, scanning the darkness.

""Where is the master key, Silas?"" Elias bellowed, striking the concrete floor inches from the smuggler's boots. ""I know Tomas left more than just a ledger! He found the original transponder! Where is it?!""

Silas spat blood onto the frozen gravel. His two missing fingers were curled into a stiff fist. ""You're too late, Elias. The girl already spoke. Roman knows.""

""The girl is dead by now!"" Elias screamed, his aristocratic composure completely shattering into raving madness. ""My team wiped that farmhouse off the map an hour ago! Everything Roman built belongs to me now!""

""Is that what your radio told you, cousin?""

Roman’s voice cut through the storm like a blade of ice.

Elias spun around, his eyes widening in pure horror as Roman and Serena emerged from the shadows between the shipping containers. The six guards raised their weapons, but before they could acquire their targets, sharp rifle fire cracked from the crane tower eighty feet above them.

Marcus Reed had already scaled the superstructure. In three rapid, muffled discharges, the sniper took out the three guards on the outer perimeter.

""Drop your weapons!"" Serena ordered, her handgun trained on the remaining two guards inside the shed. ""Your contracts are void! Elias Bellucci doesn't have an offshore penny left to his name!""

The remaining guards looked at their fallen comrades, glanced at the bleeding smuggler, and slowly dropped their rifles onto the concrete, raising their hands in surrender.

""Fools! Shoot them!"" Elias shrieked, scrambling backward toward the gangway of the Valentina. ""I’ll pay you triple! Shoot them down!""

The mercenaries backed away into the shadows of the containers, disappearing into the blizzard and leaving Elias standing alone on the icy ramp of the yacht.

Roman stepped into the shed. He drew his combat knife and sliced through the nylon ropes binding Silas Kane to the column. Silas groaned, stumbling forward, but Roman caught him by the arm, supporting the old smuggler's weight.

""You took your sweet time, Roman,"" Silas coughed, wiping blood from his beard. ""Just like your old man. Always dramatic.""

""Are you whole, Silas?""

""Nothing broken that a bottle of bourbon won't fix,"" Silas rasped. He reached inside his blood-soaked flannel shirt and pulled out a heavy brass cylinder sealed with industrial wax. ""Tomas gave this to me two days before he was run down. He said it was the mechanic's ghost. The original flight-grade recorder Elias installed in Vincent's car to trigger the bomb remotely.""

Roman took the cylinder. His fingers tightened around the cold metal until his knuckles turned white.

""Roman!"" Serena called out from the doorway. ""Look at the ship!""

Up on the bridge of the Valentina, the deck lights flickered to life. The vessel's twin diesel engines roared into gear, belching black exhaust into the falling snow. Elias was at the helm, desperately trying to cast off the stern lines from the inside cabin controls.

""He's trying to make the shipping channel,"" Serena said, running toward the pier. ""If he reaches open water, he has a private cutter waiting five miles out!""

Roman handed the brass cylinder to Silas and turned toward the gangway. ""He won't make the lighthouse.""
