Chapter 6 - The Emergency Boardroom

At 11:30 AM, Lisa burst through the security turnstiles of Moraway corporate headquarters, her hair damp from the freezing drizzle, her designer coat disheveled, and her face pale as a ghost. The security guards looked at her with mild surprise, but she barely registered their presence.
Her mind was an apocalyptic storm of regret, terror, and frantic calculation.
There has to be a way out, she thought hysterically as she pounded the elevator button for the executive floor. I can claim duress! I can tell the judge Michael fraudulently concealed his true net worth during discovery! Any court in Ohio will overturn that agreement! I am entitled to half of his estate!
When the elevator reached the thirty-fifth floor, the atmosphere was chaotic. Receptionists and junior analysts were scurrying back and forth carrying stacks of legal folders, their faces tight with anxiety.
Lisa pushed her way down the carpeted corridor toward David Cole’s corner office. She threw the heavy mahogany door open without knocking.
""David!"" she cried out. ""David, you won't believe what just happened! Michael—my ex-husband—he’s—""
David was standing behind his expansive glass desk, but he wasn't smiling. His custom silk tie was loosened at the collar, his hair was messy, and he was furiously stuffing files into an alligator-skin briefcase. Sweat glistened on his forehead.
He looked up, his eyes bloodshot and frantic. ""Lisa? What the hell are you doing barging in here? Close the door!""
""David, listen to me!"" Lisa pleaded, stepping into the room. ""Michael isn't a repairman! He’s Michael Moraway-Lawson! He’s Arthur Moraway’s grandson! He just got named the global CEO!""
Instead of the shock she expected, David froze, his face draining of all color until he looked like a corpse. His jaw trembled, and the expensive gold pen in his hand slipped, clattering across the glass tabletop.
""You... you knew?"" Lisa asked, her eyes widening in sudden realization.
""I didn't know until forty-five minutes ago,"" David whispered, his voice cracking with sheer panic. ""The emergency board communique was sent to all senior directors at 10:45. The entire restructuring was kept secret by the executive committee under strict NDA.""
""Then this is perfect!"" Lisa exclaimed, taking a step toward him, grasping for any shred of hope. ""David, you're the regional VP! You can broker a meeting! I signed the divorce papers under false pretenses! If you back me up, if you tell the board that Michael misled me—""
David looked at her as if she were completely insane. Then, he let out a harsh, bitter laugh that sounded more like a bark.
""Are you completely delusional, Lisa?"" David hissed, slamming his briefcase shut. ""Back you up? The board didn't just announce Michael as CEO. They announced an immediate forensic audit of all regional commercial accounts managed by my division!""
Lisa stopped dead in her tracks. ""What?""
""For the past three years, my department has been inflating sales figures and billing commercial clients for bogus high-end part replacements through shell distribution vendors,"" David confessed, his voice dropping to a terrified whisper as he paced behind his desk. ""Arthur Moraway suspected someone in senior management was skimming kickbacks and defrauding commercial accounts, but he couldn't prove it from the top floor. That’s why his grandson went into the field! Michael wasn't just fixing machines, you idiot! He was auditing the entire supply chain from the bottom up! He was tracking the serial numbers of the fraudulent parts directly to my signed work authorizations!""
Lisa felt the room spin wildly around her. The pieces of the puzzle slammed together with crushing clarity. Michael’s endless late-night work on his laptop. His insistence on inspecting every anomalous control board. His refusal to let elderly customers like Gloria be overcharged for parts they didn't need.
Michael hadn't just been living as a technician to learn humility; he had been gathering evidence to root out corporate corruption. And David was the primary target.
""David..."" Lisa whispered, horrified. ""What did you do?""
May you like
Before David could answer, the heavy office door swung open. Two uniformed Columbus police officers stepped inside, followed immediately by Evelyn Brooks and three private corporate auditors carrying gray file boxes.
""David Cole,"" Evelyn said, her voice echoing with clinical finality. ""By order of the Board of Directors and the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office, your employment with Moraway International is terminated immediately for cause. Officers, please execute the warrant for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and wire fraud.""
