Chapter 3 - Security Changes Sides

Tuesday morning, Emily’s badge flashed red at the lobby turnstile.

A line formed behind her.

Someone sighed.

The security supervisor, Marcus Bell, stepped from his station.

“Come with me.”

Heat rose into her face.

“I have a meeting.”

“I know.”

He led her toward a side room.

Emily recognized it.

People waited there when their employment ended.

A box of tissues sat on the table.

She hated the tissues most.

Marcus closed the door but remained standing.

“Your account was disabled overnight,” he said. “I’ve been instructed to hold your badge.”

“By whom?”

“Human resources.”

“Am I fired?”

“I haven’t been given that information.”

Outside, hurried footsteps crossed the marble.

Then Ethan opened the door.

“Emily.”

She stood so fast the chair struck the wall.

“I didn’t take anything.”

His expression tightened.

“Nobody said you did.”

“That’s what people think when security puts you in this room.”

Ethan looked at Marcus.

The supervisor’s jaw moved.

“Yes,” Marcus said. “They do.”

Twenty minutes later, company counsel confirmed that Emily’s access had been suspended after an allegation of improper data handling.

The allegation came from her manager.

No specific unauthorized file had been identified.

Ethan requested that she be placed on paid administrative leave while outside counsel assessed the issue.

Emily heard the word paid and nearly cried.

Her brother’s tuition bill sat on the kitchen counter.

Her mother’s rent was due Friday.

At nine fifteen, the lobby doors opened again.

Daniel entered in a charcoal suit.

Thomas walked beside him.

There was no temporary badge.

Marcus recognized him immediately.

His gaze flicked toward the collar covering Daniel’s dressing.

“Sir.”

“Good morning.”

Thomas presented the ownership notice and the information required for the scheduled board proceedings.

The corporate secretary arrived personally.

Within minutes, the executive elevators were restricted to authorized attendees.

Victoria appeared on the thirty-second floor as Daniel stepped out.

She looked from him to Thomas.

Then to the corporate secretary.

“This is a stunt.”

Daniel met her gaze.

“No.”

“You obtained access under false pretenses.”

“My placement was authorized through the acquisition diligence team and the company representatives responsible for the process.”

“You were carrying coffee.”

“I was also listening.”

Her eyes moved to his collar.

An involuntary glance.

He saw it.

So did Thomas.

Victoria straightened.

“If you believe a controlling investment entitles you to humiliate me—”

“I’m here to attend a board meeting.”

“You threatened me.”

“I told you that you would remember the morning.”

“And is that what this is? Revenge?”

Daniel looked toward the employees watching from behind glass partitions.

“No employee should have needed to own this company to be treated safely.”

Nobody moved.

Victoria’s face hardened.

The corporate secretary cleared her throat.

“The meeting is ready.”

Inside, the directors received the ownership confirmation, the medical documentation Daniel had chosen to provide, and preliminary evidence requiring an independent financial investigation.

Daniel did not vote himself into powers the bylaws did not give him.

His controlling stake mattered.

So did procedure.

The directors had their own duties.

By eleven, Victoria was placed on administrative leave pending investigation. Her authority to direct employees or alter records was suspended.

Martin Vale’s financial permissions were restricted.

An independent committee retained outside counsel and forensic accountants.

When the meeting ended, Victoria remained seated.

“You think you can replace a Sterling with a spreadsheet?”

Daniel closed his folder.

“I think the employees deserve a company that pays what it promises.”

Outside, he found Emily waiting with Ethan.

She stared at him.

“You’re Daniel Reed.”

“Yes.”

“The owner.”

“Controlling shareholder.”

She looked embarrassed.

“I gave you napkins.”

“You did.”

“I should have done more.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You were the first person who remembered I was a person.”

Emily’s eyes filled before she could stop them.

He did not offer her a promotion.

He did not turn the moment into a speech.

He introduced her to the independent investigator and explained that her employment concern would be reviewed separately from her report.

Then he asked whether she had somewhere private to make her statement.

Across the hallway, Victoria emerged with a security escort.

Marcus held the elevator.

The same man she had ordered to remove Daniel now waited for her.

She looked at him as though he had personally betrayed her.

Marcus kept his voice professional.

“This way, Ms. Sterling.”

For the first time, she followed an instruction she could not overturn.
