Chapter 4 - The Undignified Entry

Vanessa stood motionless, her eyes darting between the officer's cold stare, the towering Ford truck, and the wall of smirking parents who were now openly enjoying the show. Several high school seniors waiting across the road had already pulled out their phones, recording every second of her public humiliation.

"How am I supposed to get in?" she whimpered, her arrogant bravado finally cracking under the weight of total embarrassment. "Tell them to back up five feet! Just five feet so I can open my door!"

Walter leaned his head out of the truck cab, letting out a heavy, exaggerated sigh. "Wish I could help you, little lady, but my starter motor just gave out about five minutes ago. Old trucks, you know? Temperamental beasts. Might take me half an hour to get her turned over again. You know how it is with junkers."

Toby, sitting in the beat-up Volvo, shrugged innocently and held up an empty key ring. "I dropped my keys somewhere under the floor mats, officer. Searching for them right now. Could take a while."

A burst of outright laughter erupted from the parents. Vanessa looked around desperately, but every face she met was hardened with months of pent-up resentment. She had taken their spots, made their pregnant wives walk blocks in the pouring rain, laughed at an elderly veteran whose grandson had just lost his father, and bragged about her wealth while doing it. Nobody was going to lift a finger to save her dignity.

"You have two options, ma'am," Officer Miller said, crossing his arms over his chest. "You can wait for a tow truck to pull your vehicle out from the rear—which will cost you about two hundred and fifty dollars out of pocket and take at least an hour—or you can climb in through your rear liftgate."

"The trunk?!" she gasped in utter horror. "You want me to crawl through the trunk like an animal?!"

"It's an SUV, ma'am. It has an automated hatch," Miller replied without an ounce of sympathy. "The choice is entirely yours. But school traffic needs to clear in ten minutes, or I'm ordering an impound for obstructing an active school pickup zone."

Tears of pure frustration and rage welled up in Vanessa's eyes. Her perfect manicure, her three-hundred-dollar designer trousers, her carefully styled hair—everything she used to broadcast her superiority was about to be laid bare. She pressed the key fob. With a soft electronic chime, the heavy motorized trunk lid slowly swung upward, revealing the carpeted cargo area.

The entire parking lot went dead silent, holding its collective breath.

Vanessa looked at the bumper, which sat nearly waist-high. She looked at her tight designer slacks and her three-inch heels. Gritting her teeth so hard her jaw muscles twitched, she kicked off her expensive shoes, tossing them onto the gravel. She hoisted one leg up, scrambling for purchase against the slick leather bumper.

Her foot slipped. She let out a muffled squeal, catching herself against the frame. With an undignified grunt, she threw her torso onto the cargo floor, her legs kicking wildly in the air like an upturned beetle. The fabric of her designer sweater caught on the trunk latch with a sharp, sickening rip.

A chorus of stifled giggles echoed across the sidewalk. Vanessa army-crawled over the folded third-row seats on her hands and knees, her hair coming completely undone, tumbling down into her face in sweaty tangles. She bumped her head against the roof liner with a dull thud, cursed loudly, and finally tumbled over the center console into the driver's seat, gasping for breath like a stranded fish.

She hit the ignition button. The engine roared to life with an angry rev. She slammed the transmission into reverse, peeled rubber against the gravel, and shot out of the double stall at blinding speed, almost clipping the dumpster before screeching onto Maple Avenue. She didn't even wait for the rear hatch to close; it flapped wildly in the autumn wind as she tore down the road, leaving behind a cloud of exhaust and the thunderous, roaring applause of fifty school parents.
