Chapter 1 - The Driver Who Knew Her Name

“What are you talking about?”

Elena’s question vanished beneath the rain.

Dante held up the photograph without touching her. The red words showed through the ruined surface, crooked and ugly.

SHE WON’T REACH HER SISTER’S HOUSE.

For a moment, she heard nothing except water hitting the roof of the sedan.

Then the driver lowered his window.

“Mrs. Moretti? We really should leave.”

She had not given the booking service her married name.

She had used Elena Bell.

Her maiden name.

Dante saw recognition move across her face.

“Step away from the door,” he said quietly. “Toward the house, or toward Marco. Your choice. Just away from him.”

This time, Elena moved.

The driver’s hand disappeared below the dashboard.

Marco shouted something to the guards. Dante stepped between Elena and the vehicle as the engine surged.

The sedan shot forward, clipped a stone planter, and tore across the wet lawn toward the service exit. A security vehicle blocked the lane before it reached the gate. Brakes screamed. Metal folded.

Elena pressed both hands against her stomach.

“Is anyone hurt?”

Marco was already speaking into his radio.

“The guards are out. Driver’s being detained.”

“Call the police,” Elena said.

Dante looked at her.

She met his eyes through the rain.

“If you want me to believe I’m safe with you, call the police.”

For years, Dante had handled problems behind closed doors. Men vanished from payrolls. Threats disappeared. Questions went unanswered.

He took out his phone.

“I’m reporting an attempted abduction,” he told the dispatcher. “My wife is seven months pregnant.”

Elena’s knees weakened before the call ended.

Dante reached toward her, then stopped.

“May I?”

She nodded once.

He supported her elbow while Marco brought an umbrella. No one spoke as they climbed the steps she had descended only minutes earlier.

Inside, Elena refused the master bedroom.

“The sitting room.”

Dante opened the door himself.

She sat near the fireplace, wrapped in a blanket a housekeeper brought. Her suitcase stood beside the chair, dripping onto an expensive rug.

Dante looked at it and understood that danger had interrupted her departure.

It had not canceled it.

“Call my sister,” Elena said.

He handed her his phone.

Sofia answered on the second ring.

“Where are you? Your ride disappeared from the app, and somebody called saying you changed your mind.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I didn’t.”

Dante turned sharply toward Marco.

“Preserve every call and camera recording.”

Sofia’s voice tightened. “Elena?”

“I’m safe. For now.”

Those last two words settled between husband and wife.

An ambulance arrived before the detectives. Elena agreed to be examined because her stomach had tightened twice, and because fear was no longer a good enough reason to pretend she felt fine.

Dante stood outside the sitting room while the paramedic checked her.

For the first time in his own house, he waited to be invited inside.

A detective named Nora Bennett arrived with rain on her shoulders and a notebook already open.

She spoke to Elena first.

Not Dante.

Not Marco.

Elena noticed.

Bennett asked about the ride, the envelope, the photographs, and everyone who had known she intended to leave.

“My sister,” Elena said. “And whoever listens inside this house.”

Dante flinched.

The detective wrote that down.

When Bennett asked to see the envelope, Marco brought a clear evidence sleeve. Inside lay the photographs and the proposed marriage agreement.

Bennett studied the document.

“Who gave you this?”

“It was in my dressing room.”

“Delivered by whom?”

“I don’t know.”

Dante spoke from the doorway.

“My mother’s assistant had access to that room this afternoon.”

Elena looked up.

He continued before she could ask.

“I met Isabella Romano yesterday. She brought that proposal. I refused it.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I thought I could make it disappear.”

Bennett’s pen stopped.

Elena laughed without humor.

“And now someone almost made me disappear instead.”

A guard appeared behind Dante carrying a small paper bag.

“Detective? We found this in the vehicle.”

Bennett took it.

Inside was a prepaid phone, a folded map, and a printed photograph of Sofia’s apartment building.

On the back, someone had written an address.

It was not Sofia’s address.

Dante recognized it immediately.

An abandoned lakefront property owned by a company his family had controlled for twenty years.

His face emptied.

Elena watched him.

“Tell me.”

He looked at the map again.

May you like

Then he finally answered his wife without checking who was listening.

“That house belongs to my uncle.”
